IN BRIEF
Softball team to compete
in national tournament
The Oregon softball team heads to
Georgia to play in one of the most
competitive tournaments of the early
season in the National Fastpitch
Coaches Association’s lOth-annual
Leadoff Classic.
In last year’s tournament, six of the
eight teams went on to play in the
NCAA Women’s College World Series.
TWenty-four teams will participate in
the Classic, with 20 of them qualifying
for last season’s regional tournaments.
The Ducks (6-4) will face Creighton
(3-2) today at 11:30 a.m. and Alabama
(15-1) at 2 p.m.
The game against Creighton will be
the first time the Ducks have faced the
Bluejays under head coach Kathy
Arendsen and only the second time
ever the two have met.
The latter game will be a challenge
for the Ducks as they face Alabama.
The Crimson Tide is ranked No. 8 in
the latest ESPN.com/USA Softball Top
25 poll, while the Ducks are ranked
No. 21. Alabama features pitcher
Chrissy Owens, who is 4-0 this season
with a team-low 1.01 ERA. It will also
be the first time Oregon has faced Al
abama under Arendsen and only the
second time ever the programs have
met on softball diamond.

Lacrosse team heads
to Denver for two games
Oregon lacrosse travels to Denver
this weekend in the Ducks’ first road
games of the season. Oregon (0-1, 0-1
Mountain Pacific Sports Federation)
takes on Denver (0-2,0-0 MPSF) today
at 2 p.m. and No. 3-ranked Northwest
ern (1-0) on Saturday at 11 a.m.
The Ducks, coming off a 19-6 loss to
Stanford in their inaugural game, will
face a Pioneer squad looking to re
bound from a tough opening week
end. Denver lost to Duquesne 12-10
and Duke 21-6 in its season’s debut
games. Midfielder Steph Greenlees, an
All-MPSF selection last year, leads the
Pioneers’ offense. The junior from
Lake Forest, 111., led all Denver players
in points (55) and goals (44) last year.
On Saturday, the young Oregon
squad will test themselves against one
of the nation’s best lacrosse programs.
Northwestern, whose win came at the
expense of No. 6-ranked North Caroli
na, opened the season ranked No. 3 in
the country. The Wildcats came back
from a 5-2 halftime deficit to defeat the
Tar Heels, 6-5. For her efforts in shut
ting down North Carolina’s offense,
Northwestern senior defender Court
ney Koester was named Inside
Lacrosse’s National Player of the
Week. Earlier in the season, Koester
and sophomore Kristen Kjellman were
both named to the Tewaaraton Watch
List. The Tewaaraton TVophy is similar
to college football’s Heisman Ttophy.
The trip to Colorado will serve as a
homecoming for two Ducks. Fresh
man goalkeeper Allison O’Brien from
Colorado Springs, Colo., and freshman
midfielder Rachel Walkerfrom Little
ton, Colo., a suburb of Denver.
The road trip begins a month-long
stretch for the Ducks where they will
be playing games every weekend.
Following the Denver series, Oregon
will return to Eugene for a three
week homestand, starting with
MPSF rival UC Davis.

Leunen also came up big for the
Ducks, scoring 12 points on 6-of-8
shooting.
The Ducks started slow, trailing Cal
8-1 to start the game, but Hairston hit
two three-pointers to close the gap.
Oregon went on a 12-0 run in the
first half and took a 26-17 lead.
The Bears pounded the ball inside
all night, not scoring their first points
outside the paint or from the free
throw line until Martin Smith hit a
jumper with a minute left in the half to
make it 32-23, Oregon.
In the second half, the Bears an
swered late with a 9-0 run to get the
game within one point at 53-52 before
Brooks took over to finish the game.
Next up for Oregon is Stanford on
Saturday at Mac Court at 4 p.m.
“It’s going to be a fight and a battle
for us every day down the stretch,”
Kent said. “That starts on Saturday
here against Stanford.”
