IN BRIEF
Sharon's Cabinet begins
charting Israel's borders
JERUSALEM — Prime Minister Ariel
Sharon’s Cabinet began charting Is
rael’s future borders Sunday, giving
final approval to a withdrawal from
the Gaza Strip and a revised route for
the West Bank separation barrier that
would move Israel’s border.
With the vote, an Israeli govern
ment agreed for the first time since
capturing the West Bank and Gaza in
1967 to dismantle the dozens of Jew
ish settlements there.
While the Palestinians have
balked at Israel’s go-it-alone ap
proach, they avoid declaring the
moves a deal-breaker in a reinvigo
rated peace process.
The Gaza withdrawal won approval
from 17 Cabinet ministers.
Sharon, a former settler patron, said
the dismantling of 21 settlements in
Gaza and four in the West Bank is vital
for Israel’s security. He later signed an
order requiring some 9,000 settlers to
leave their homes in these areas by
July 20 or face removal by force.
He said the vote proved Israel’s
readiness to take “painful steps ... to
makepeace.”
The easy endorsement appeared to
be the final political defeat for with
drawal opponents, including the Jew
ish settler lobby. The pullout could still
be derailed if Sharon fails to get his
2005 budget passed.

Business: Resources found
in partners and investors
Continued from page 1
explaining that retail and service
companies generally have lower
pay and growth potential than
production companies.
Braud advised that loans should
not be an entrepreneur’s only finan
cial strategy.
“If someone really has a great idea,
they should be looking at some other
things as well,” he said. Other options,
Braud added, include getting people to
invest in the business or selecting
someone with more resources and ex
perience as a business partner.
“Financing is something that should
be at the end of someone’s business
planning,” Braud said, emphasizing
that it is very important to have a solid
plan in place first.
“A good business plan is something
that would be very critical for us if we
were looking at a startup,” Braud said.
Braud said his department is
cautious when evaluating startup busi
nesses for loans.
“The failure rate for startups is very
high,” he said. “That’s just the nature
of business.”
However, it is not impossible to ob
tain loans for new businesses.
“There’s a lot of young entrepre
neurs that come out of the Universi
ty that we’ve done business with,”
Braud said.
Despite the hard work inherent in
the process, in his e-mail Swangard
listed many advantages for students
who start businesses: “Amazing
sense of accomplishment and belief
in one’s own capabilities, the
chance to build something from the
ground up, being your own boss
and all that comes with it.”
“Bill Gates did well,” Swangard
wrote.
