Still, women and minorities are underrepresented in some re spects. Schroeder gave the exam ple of the Judicial Conference of the United States, made up in part by the chief judges of the 13 cir cuit courts of appeal: Apart from the chief justice, it has 22 men, 4 women and no minorities. She said as more women have entered the field over the years, the profession has become more mobile and flexible. “The profession is still a highly structured hierarchy, but it’s much less stratified than it used to be,” she said. Schroeder’s speech was preceded by a panel discussion in which sev eral women in the field of law shared their perspectives on what it means to be a woman in the profession. United States Magistrate Judge Janice Stewart said women have to balance two full time jobs — their profession and their work at home. “I don’t know any men that face that challenge of two jobs,” Stew art said. U.S. District Judge Ann Aiken said it can be difficult to live up to all the expectations that come with being in professional positions. “I think it’s a constant daily bat tle to stay who you are,” Aiken said, adding that people shouldn’t forget that despite their desires to excel and be “uber lawyers ... you have to be a person first.” Women at times also have to put up a tough front in the work place. “In the work that I do ... you re ally can’t show any fear,” U.S. At torney Karin Immergut said. Schroeder said the key to suc cess in any job is to have a sense of humor. ayishayahya@dailyemerald.com MADD: Proceeds might help finance advertising campaign Continued from page 1 $1,400 through a raffle for MADD and spoke with Stoeffler about her fundraising efforts. “I spoke to Barbara on the phone and proposed my idea for doing a raffle,” she said. “I think it’s a great organization and the things she said were just really meaningful, and they show that this is a worthwhile cause.” “I think a lot of people are just not educated enough about the ef fects of any alcohol whatsoever on how it impairs your driving,” Scheinman said. “I think education is the most important thing be cause people don’t realize that they are drunk driving a lot of the time.” The money raised by the Univer sity sororities and the Beta Theta Pi fraternity will possibly be used for an advertising campaign for MADD, Stoeffler said. The reason for telling others about her son’s death and for her involvement with MADD is simple. “It’s to save lives,” she said. itiZO 180solutions 180solutions: A Great Place to Work! | Exciting, growing, forward thinking, hip, cool, rewarding 180solutions is an online search marketing company that was established in 1999.
