EMU: Board members grapple with growth
continued Trom page b
Services, the UO Ticket Office, the
EMU Craft Center, the UO Cultural Fo
rum and several Club Sports teams.
During the meeting, board mem
ber Gabe Shaughnessy expressed
concerns that the last budgets to be
discussed received unequal treat
ment because some committee mem
bers had said the board had already
approved lots of growth.
But Clark told the Emerald that
while at the beginning it seemed as if
some members “weren’t voting off
their priority lists,” the process was fair.
“I don’t think that that was a prob
lem,” she said. “I think everyone pretty
much stuck to their prioritized lists and
tried to give growth to programs they
felt would better serve students.”
Clark said she didn’t expect prob
lems when seeking approval of
the budget from the full board
i __
because board members have
communicated openly.
“In past years, I know that we al
ways thought there would maybe be
a little more talk at full the board than
there actually was,” she said. "I think
we’ll hopefully have a really good
dialogue about our budget to make
sure it’s the correct budget to send
to Senate. ”
During the Senate meeting Wednes
day, Senator Jack Crocifisso urged the
Senate to extend the board’s deadline
for submitting its final budget by sev
eral hours, saying the full board meet
ing will be a “circus."
Zlatek said the process of approv
ing the budget before the full board
will depend on what questions the
board has.
“I don’t think it will be a circus,”
she said.
Clark said she hasn’t talked to
many senators about their thoughts
about the budget, noting that sena
tors shouldn’t be surprised the budg
et proposal includes growth.
“I’m not sure how people are going
to respond to that,” she said. “I just
think we’re going to have to go with
good reasons as to how this helps stu
dents and how growth items are a
good use of the incidental fee. ”
Zlatek said the committee ap
proved growth that is “vital” to keep
programs going and improve their
services to students.
“It’s not growth that is unneces
sary,” she said.
Clark said the budget process was
successful.
“I think we were responsible this
year with using the incidental fee
and trying to keep the fee down for
students,” she said.

Chemistry: Guenza researches
protein folding, cancer treatment
Continued from page 1
In the past, some researchers
have done numerical calculations
after the fact to understand the
properties of chemicals they work
with. Guenza’s work is unique be
cause she used a theoretical ap
proach to come up with a formula
usable with multiple molecules.
“I was able to derive an analytical
solution,” Guenza said. “What peo
ple have been doing up to now is
writing down results from what
they had already. ”
Another application of Guenza’s
research is understanding protein
folding in the human body as it re
lates to treating cancer.
“You want to know how these big
molecules fold together inside the
human body,” she explained.
Chemistry graduate student Es
ther Caballero-Manrique, who
works with biological polymers
in Guenza’s lab, said their cancer
research actually uses proteins
from bacteria.
“The dynamics are similar, but if
we can understand how this
works, we can understand re
search of cancer,” Caballero-Man
rique said. “Very, very interesting
experimental results are coming
out every day, and we need to
understand these big models,”
Guenza said.
