Ducks conquer

Northwest sweep
Oregon uses two second-half scoring runs to beat
a lowly Washington State team 69-50 on Saturday
BY STEPHEN MILLER
SPORTS REPORTER
What looked like a struggle for
both teams turned out to be a
confidence booster for one and
the same old news for the other.
The Oregon women’s basket
ball team cruised by Washington
State 69-50 Saturday at McArthur
Court in front of 3,702 fans.
The Ducks moved to 5-2 in the
Pacific-10 Conference and 12-4
overall and completed a sweep at
home of their Northwest rivals
for the first time since the 1999
2000 season.
At the same time, Oregon won
its third straight while the
Cougars’ extended their losing
streak to 10 games. Washington
State (4-13, 0-8) has yet to get a
Pac-10 victory this season.
“This was a really important
weekend for us and we’re proud
of our team and how we per
formed in both games,” Oregon
head coach Bev Smith said.
Oregon’s Cathrine Kraayeveld
had little trouble finding the bas
ket from long range as she hit 4 of
5 from beyond the arc. The senior
forward shot 4 of 10 from the
field and earned her second dou
ble-double in as many games —
her fifth of the season — with 16
points and 11 rebounds, both
game-highs.
Oregon guard Kaela Chapde
laine started in place of Chelsea
Wagner, whose season ended
when the anterior cruciate liga
ment in her left knee tore during
Thursday’s game against Wash
ington.
Play from both teams was slop
py in the first half.
Washington State’s Kate Benz,
the Pac-lO’s leading rebounder,
hauled in five of her team’s 20
boards in the first half while Ore
gon brought down only 16.
“It was a sub-par performance
in the first half,” said Smith,
whose team shot 40 percent (24
of 60) for the game. “I think we
were looking to press a little bit
but in the second half we worked
better together.”

field goal of the game — gave the

Oregon grapples with Boise State, takes dual
The Ducks came hack from a 12-point deficit with several
young wrestlers competing outside their usual weight classes
BYSCOTTJ. ADAMS
DAILY EMERALD FREELANCE REPORTER
The Oregon wrestling team recorded
its third win in a row Friday night when
it defeated reigning Pacific-10 Confer
ence champion Boise State 25-23 at
McArthur Court.
The Ducks (4-5 overall, 1-3 Pac-10)
limped into the dual hampered by injuries
but would be spotted 12 points by the
Broncos, who forfeited matches at the
125- and 141-pound weight classes. The
charity points would prove vital to Ore
gon and head coach Chuck Kearney,
who would have to once again call
upon his younger wrestlers to grab wins
and wrestle outside of their usual
weight classes.
“We had some guys who were called
into service tonight because of injury
and we had guys wrestling out of their
weight classes,” Kearney said. “My hat
goes off to those guys for stepping up.”
With a 12-point deficit to overcome,
No. 17 Scott Jorgensen of Boise State
found himself wrestling in a pivotal
spot against junior Martin Mitchell at
the 133-pound class. The underdog
Mitchell gave Jorgensen all he could
handle as the two were locked in a
close match, with Jorgensen leading 7-6
late in the third round. Despite his
effort, Mitchell could not record an es
cape or reversal and lost by way of a
10-6 decision.
The win gave the Broncos momen
tum as they took the next three matches
and the lead, 20-12, going into the 174
pound match. Boise State’s No. 8 Ben
Cherrington recorded a 19-3 technical
fall over redshirt freshman Nate Gipson
(149), who was filling in for the injured
Scott Woods. The Broncos recorded two
ensuing pins at the 157- and 165-pound
divisions. Lex Case pinned Steve John
son (157) of the Ducks with 3:10 left,
followed by Bronco Russell Brunson’s
pinning of Michael Chalfin (165).
Junior Shane Webster (174) of Ore
gon wrestled Ben Gilliland in a match
that proved to be the turning point for
the Ducks. The third-ranked Webster,
who has lost only one match this sea
son, wrestled defensively to record a
13-4 major decision over Gilliland, clos
ing the team score to 20-16 in favor of
Boise State. Webster is now 16-1 on
the season.
Oregon junior Chet McBee (184) won
his biggest match of the year as he de
feated Boise State’s Casey Phelps by
way of a 6-5 decision to bring the Ducks
within one of tying the Broncos. The
crucial match gave senior Scott Barker

a chance to take the lead for the Ducks
in the following match.
“All week long we have been practicing
defense and it really paid off tonight,”
McBee said. “I took the lead late and didn’t
lose it.”
Kearney was more than pleased with
McBee’s effort and ability to stay fo
cused under pressure while protecting
his lead.
“Chet wrestled really strong,”
Kearney said. “He knew it was a match
the team needed to win and went out
and wrestled smart and aggressive.”
The table was now set for No. 5 Bark
er (197) to put the Ducks ahead. Barker
lived up to his expectations by pinning
K.C. Walsh in the first round and im
proving his season record to 23-4. The
