McKenzie River Protection Project _
Wednesday, January 12
Mountain bikers, kayakers, hikers, skiers, rafters, and fly fishing fanatics from around the world flock to the
McKenzie River because of its renowned beauty and limitless recreation opportunities. The Mighty Mac's waterfalls,
whitewater, fishing holes, ancient rain forest, eight foot wide trees, and volcanic peaks make this nature's wonder
land. Even more, this watershed provides pure drinking water for nearly 300,000 Oregon residents downstream.
Join the OP, CWP, ONRC and OSPIRG for a slide presentation on what the McKenzie River Watershed has to
offer to outdoor enthusiasts and hear about current threats it faces, including old-growth logging on public land

Trip Initiator's Clinic
Tuesday and Saturday, January 18 and 22
Become an OP trip initiator: it’s easy. The first night covers OP philosophy, liability, trip planning, and procedures.
Saturday we’ll go over the use of the equipment facility (The Bam), the gear, vehicles, safety procedures, and well
take a trip to the local rivers or woods. This outing takes the mystery out of launching your first trip! Attendance
at both sessions is required to become a trip initiator. Free! Tuesday 5'30 pm' Outdoor Program

Beginner & Intermediate Telemark Skiing
Saturday, January 22
The OP and the City of Eugene Riverhouse are working together again to offer you the chance to learn the art
of freeheel skiing. The Level I class is designed for those new to telemark, but with some skiing experience
(backcountry, basic tele or basic alpine) and Level II is perfect for those who have telemark basics down and need
tips to improve technique and reduce your frustration. Pre-register and pay at the OP Office or the City of Eugene
Riverhouse. Telemark gear required; telemark rentals are available at Berg's Ski Shop. Discount lift tickets available
with preregistration. Lesson $20. Lesson with lift ticket $44. Van ride (departs 7:30 am from OP Bam) $6.

Sherpa: The Proving Grounds

The Outdoor Program and the UO Women's Center are proud to co-host this fascinating film that follows a 28-day
women’s high altitude climbing course set in the Himalayas of Sikkim India. Climbing legends Jim Whittaker
and Nawang Gombu Sherpa help tell the amazing story of women from all walks of life, from Nepal, India and
Bhutan. Some are there simply to test their capabilities while others strive to become the backbone of modem-day
high-altitude expeditions. The film won Best Documentary at the Telluride Indiefest and has been accepted into
numerous film festivals. Join us for this beautiful and inspiring 72-minute documentary. Filmmakers, Sarah and
Win Whittaker, will introduce the film and answer questions after the show. Cost is $2 for UO Students and OP

Introduction to Cross-Country Skiing
Thursday and Saturday, January 27 and 29
Discover why cross-country skiing is such a timeless and satisfying way to glide into the snowy backcountry. OP
staff will share what they know about traveling up and down hills and introduce kicking and gliding techniques.
Follow-up trips will be planned at the completion of the clinic. Bring your own skis or rent from local shops.
Pre-register and pay $6 transportation fee at the OP Office.

Indoor Rock Climbing Sessions
Saturdays, January 29, and February 5,12, and 26
Want to discover, or improve, your climbing skills while meeting other capable climbers? The OP has reserved
time on the UO Rock Wall for four skill builder sessions. Instruction is not provided but belayers are. This is a
great opportunity to meet other climbers, practice, and have fun. Reserve your spot by prepaying at the OP Office.
Rock Climbing cost is $4 per session if you have your own gear (harness/shoes/belay device) or $6 if you need
gear, It’s time to climb and all skill levels are welcome!

Seven Summits Snowboard Quest

The Seven Summits Snowboard Quest is the successful story of Stephen Koch's dream to climb and snowboard on
the highest peaks on each of the seven continents. His slide presentation will take us to: Aconcagua, Denali, Mount
Elbrus, Kilimanjaro, Mount Vinson, Carstenz Pyramid, and Mount Everest. Using stunning slides and engaging
story telling, Stephen will share his insights about adventure and his message is clear: “with determination and
perserverance one can achieve great things, especially a greater understanding of oneself”. Stephen's hard work
has earned him the full attention of the outdoor press, he has been featured in Outside, Blue, Couloir, and Men's
Journal. Outside Magazine hosted Stephen's show and calls it “a thrilling story, Stephen., raises the bar for other
athlete speakers... an unforgettable experience” $3 UO students and OP Co-op members, $6 general admission.

Avalanche Awareness Clinic
Thursday and Sunday, February 3 & 6
The OP is joining forces again with the City of Eugene River House to offer an informative two-part clinic designed
to introduce the basic principals of avalanche awareness and backcountry travel in suspect areas. The evening
presentation is free; you’ll learn about snow characteristics, route finding, and rescue techniques. The optional
field trip cost is $10 and provides the opportunity to practice beacon searches, probe lines, and snow assessment.
This is a must for all backcountry skiers, boarders, and snowshoe hikers. Preregister and pay for the field trip at
the OP; no preregistration required for the evening session which is free and open to all.

Hon of Siberia and India
Last summer, Christine Bosa and Marlin Peterson embarked on an fascinating journey through Siberian Russia and
Northwest India. These intrepid adventurers from Bellingham, Washington traveled on mountain bikes carrying
everything they needed in their bikepacks. They photographed their adventure using rare, double-lens stereoscopic
cameras. The unique cameras allowed them to create slides in multiple-dimensions; these slides magically cre
ate depth and LUNGE out of the screen in 3-D! Experience the challenging terrain, stunning landscapes, and
fascinating people of remote India and Russia all while wearing funky 3-D glasses! Show up early as seating is
limited. $2 UO students and OP Co-op members, $4 general admission.

If you learn the constellations of the night sky through mythology and photography it becomes much easier to
remember them and their relationships to each other. Instead of random specks of light in the dark backdrop of
space, the heavens become an interrelated tapestry of gods, heroes, monsters, and other mythological creatures.
Local amateur astronomer and outdoor adventurer, John Flinn, will show us how to recognize the important
constellations, introduce us to the mythological star stories, and show how constellation positions change with
the seasons and time of day. John's photos are grounded in familiar mountain landscapes. Join us for this fun,

Snowshoeing is great fun in all kinds of snow and it's easy to learn. Come get out on the snow and see for yourself
what a great way to travel this is. Backcountry snow boarders, snow hikers, and anyone who is curious about this
ancient method of winter travel are welcome. Rent the OP's shoes for $3 or bring your own. Pre-register and pay

Oregon Wild • Andy Kerr

Conservationist Andy Kerr returns to the UO to introduce his latest book, Oregon Wild: Endangered Forest
Wilderness, which celebrates Oregon's last wild forests. From the moss-draped coastal rainforests, to the arid
Hells Canyon, to the Klamath-Siskiyou region and everything in between, these wild places provide us with clean
drinking water, outstanding recreational opportunities, and create vital habitat for fish and wildlife. Andy's slide
presentation will show us these wild places through photos and storytelling; a book signing will follow. Join The
OP and the Oregon Natural Resource Council for this wonderful show. Free.

OP Kayak Pool Sessions

Get ready to roll! Practice your skills in a warm, supportive environment. The Outdoor Program has reserved pool
space at Gerlinger Pool on the UO Campus for two skill builder sessions. An OP staff person will be on hand to
offer informal tips but instruction is not provided. A small pool means that space will fill quickly. Reserve your
spot by prepaying at the OP Office. Pool Session: $3 UO students and OP Co-op members, $5 general admission,
