With 59,000 fans as little as 10 yards away from the action and
an architectural structure that seems to cascade fan noise onto the
players, Autzen Stadium has gained the reputation as one of the
toughest places to play in the country.
The biggest and most obvious reason for the lore Autzen has
created is the thousands of loyal fans that pack into the stadium
every Saturday.
Fans turn up the volume when a Duck opponent is backed up
deep in its own territory, and know that a third-and-seven in the
fourth quarter is worth being hoarse for the following week.
“Autzen’s 59,000 strong make the ‘Big House’ (Michigan)
collectively sound like a pathetic wimper,” the Michigan Daily
wrote in 2003. “It’s louder than ‘The Swamp’ at Florida, ‘The Shoe’
in Columbus and ‘Death Valley’ at Louisiana State. Autzen
Stadium is where great teams go to die.”
Oregon extended its string of sellouts to 36 home appearances
and, for the seventh year in a row, Oregon has set a record for
football season tickets sold.
