He became the first Venezuelan to win a Cy Young Award, and not only that, he was a unanimous choice. “This is like a dream come true,” he said after earning the American League honor Thursday. “I’m a little surprised that I ended up the season where I ended up the season.” The Minnesota T\vins’ left-hander received all 28 first-place votes in balloting by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. Santana, who went 20-6 and led the AL with a 2.61 ERA and 265 strikeouts, became the first unanimous Cy Young winner since Arizona’s Randy Johnson two years ago and the first in the AL since Boston’s Pedro Martinez in 2000. He is the 18th unanimous winner overall, the seventh in the AL. Curt Schilling, 21-6 with a 3.26 ERA in his first season with the Red Sox, received 27 second-place votes and one third-place vote for 82 points. Mariano Rivera of the New York Yankees, who led the major leagues with a career-high 53 saves, received the other second-place vote and 24 thirds for 27 points. “I’m surprised this has been a unanimous decision,” Santana said. “I thought this was going to be a real tough race. ” Santana traveled Thursday morning from his hometown of Tovar Merida to Caracas. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez planned to congratulate him Friday. — The Associated Press Men's: Kent will experiment with rotations Continued from page 5A and it’s going to slow down now and again, those guys are going to throw the ball to you. It’s our (the post play ers) job to get them the ball because they run so hard out there.” Kent said he will also be figuring out rotations that benefit the team the most. “We want to find out and be com fortable with our rotation,” Kent said. “I need to know when I send guys into the game how they play and how they perform with the minutes they get.” Last game, the Ducks brought in many different lineups and each seemed to show some sort of cohesion. “I think it’s great,” Hairston said about the team’s ability to play along side each other. “We have a very unselfish basketball team and we understand sacrifice and want to make each other better.” claytonjones@ dailyemerald, com Women's: Rebounding strong suit for Ducks Continued from page 5A 15 three-pointers in the first half, com pared to six in the second. From the floor, the Ducks went 32 63 (50.8%) and were paced by sen ior center Andrea Bills. Bills went a perfect 5-of-5 from the field and 2-of 6 from the free-throw fine and led the team in points with 12. Senior Cathrine Kraayeveld was the only other Duck in double figures in points with 10 and tied for the lead for rebounds with a game-high nine. Oregon doubled up Western Ore gon in rebounding, collecting a total of 50 boards compared to the Wolves’ 24 boards for the game. Freshman post player Gabrielle Richards also made her presence felt against Western Oregon, scoring nine points and gathering nine boards in 14 minutes of action. Free throws were the biggest problem for the Ducks, converting just 6-of-15. “We have got to work on getting to the free-throw line and then shooting better (from the line),” Smith said. The Ducks beat Strakonice last year 80-69 behind senior Corrie Mizusawa’s 15 assists and Kraayeveld’s 20 points. For Strakon ice, Musilova had 18 points. briansmith@ daily emerald, com your independent student newspaper i« s* tc r T i it r <£ r i. p‘<& c. jt sti, oo e>rr *** sy raster •#.**«> s*/v* ■> w ****>• -# f* * c J s*t * r«r>Ai jr (mm ’A» a*1T wg|pr -> M*t Af/^T At P . iP/Mfr«r rr^p «' T ***■ //'.i:: tuen veear • <#.*•» win a/mc rrc irmctr •'<*/» C i> <4*j» 6iAfHr''/
