Fullback
Dante Rosario
Oregon sophomore Dante Rosario is a fullback and a
whole lot more.
“He’s a playmaker,” Oregon head coach Mike Bellotti
said. “And we need to find a way to get him the ball.”
Rosario has seven rushes for 25 yards and
one touchdown this season, but has proved
himself a potent receiver, catching 19 balls
for 168 yards and four touchdowns. His
four receiving touchdowns rank second
on the team.
Rosario came to Oregon possessing the
ability to play multiple positions on the
football field.
The Dayton High School standout
played on both sides of the ball and
earned Oregon 2A state defensive player
of the year honors, as well as first-team
all-state honors on both offense and de
fense in 2002. He posted 144 tackles and
three sacks as a free safety and middle line
backer to go along with 1,238 yards rushing his sen
ior year. He was vital in his team’s state champi
onship victory over Amity, rushing for four
touchdowns and 126 yards.
“He can be the single-back ball carrier,” Oregon of
fensive coordinator Andy Ludwig told the Oregonian.
“He can be the second tight end. He can be the lead
blocker. He can line up in wide receiver positions. And all
with equal effectiveness.”
Rosario played in all 13 games as a freshman at Oregon and
showed a knack for running and catching the football. Rosario
carried the ball 17 times for 58 yards and a score and had 12 re
ceptions for 131 yards last season. He had three catches for 36
yards and a touchdown against Minnesota in the Sun Bowl.
Rosario was awarded the Len Casanova Award as the
team’s top newcomer.

Linebacker
Spencer Havner
UCLA’s junior inside linebacker Spencer
Havner is a tackling machine.
In nine games this season, Havner has 110
tackles and is on pace to match the highest
total by a Bruin since 1989,134. He is tied
for fifth in the nation entering last week’s
game against Washington State, and leads
the nation in solo tackles
(8.11) and is sixth in the
country in total tackles
per game (12.22).
“He is definitely rack
ing up the tackles,” UCLA
head coach Karl Dorrell said.
“He has done a really nice job
of getting acclimated to a new
position. He needs to continue
that trend and he will be one of the
best linebackers in our conference.”
Havner is one of the 12 semifinalists
for the Butkus Award, presented annually to the na
tion’s top linebacker. He is also one of the 12 semifinalists
for the Rotary Lombardi Award, presented to the nation’s
top lineman.
Havner was also named Pacific-10 Conference Defensive
Player of the Week for Oct. 4-10.
“Spencer being defensive player of the week shows you the confi
dence of the defense,” Dorrell said. “(And that) is helping the process
in terms of the improvement and the production (of the defense). ”
His 17 tackles against Illinois earlier in the season were the most
by a Bruin since Robert Thomas had 18 at Washington State in
2001. He recorded 16 tackles against Stanford and Oklahoma State,
14 against San Diego State and 13 against Washington.
Havner ranked 14th on the Bruin’s career tackling list with 288
before the Washington State game and can easily move into the
top 10 by the end of the year.
