Niners seek improvement,
revenge in Seattle rematch
Jerry Rice and other San Francisco alumni say
the team, off to its worst start since 1979, has promise
BY GREG BEACHAM
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
SAN FRANCISCO — Joe Montana
refuses. Ronnie Lott won’t bite. And
in the days before what might be his
last trip to Candlestick Park, Jerry
Rice has been a model of diplomacy.
The greatest players from the great
est teams in the San Francisco 49ers’
storied history refuse to criticize the
mess that’s been made of their
beloved franchise.
With a knowing nod and a few
conciliatory platitudes, they’ve
simply moved on — Montana to his
financial interests, Lott to his broad
casting duties, and Rice to the Seat
tle Seahawks (4-3), who would love
to claim the Niners’ erstwhile role as
the NFC West’s perennial power.
Though the 49ers (1-6) are
stumbling to their worst start since
1979, Rice and his fellow alumni
are remarkably more upbeat than
their fans about owner John York,
general manager Terry Donahue
and the crew of young, cheap play
ers who constitute one of the NFL’s
sorriest clubs.
“I’m looking at that team, and they
are really playing hard,” Rice said.
“They might be a couple of players
away from winning ballgames and
being a contender again. When I look
at them, I can still see that 49er pride
and that no-give-up attitude. It's going
to pay off for them.”
York couldn’t have scripted a
sunnier forecast for the 49ers’ cloudy
future. In fact, there’s been talk the
club will attempt to sign Rice in the off
season so he could retire in garnet and
gold — and Rice has thought about it.
“If I get the opportunity back there,
that would be great,” Rice said.
“I don’t have a problem with it.”
On Sept. 26, the Seahawks beat
the 49ers 34-0 in Seattle for San
Francisco’s first shutout loss since
Oct. 9, 1977.
“It was embarrassing,” running
back Kevan Barlow said.
But the game also could spur the
49ers, who looked similarly lifeless on
offense last week in a loss to Chicago.
“The great thing that we have now
is an opportunity to re-prove
ourselves against this team,” coach
Dennis Erickson said. “There is a lot
of motivation because of that, there's
no question about it.”
Soccer: Ducks look to spoil Arizona's run
Continued from page 5A
than one goal per game. The Ducks
have scored two goals or more
in only three matches this season,
two of them being three-goal
efforts against Weber State and
Wyoming.
Freshman forward Kami Kapaku
has been the most consistent scorer
this season, leading the team in
goals (4), shots (32), shots on goal
(22) and points (9).
The lack of scoring has put pressure
on redshirt junior goalkeeper
Domenique Lainez to keep the team in
games. Lainez has 78 saves this season
and is second in the conference in
saves per game with 4.88.
Oregon vs. Arizona State
(4-2-1 Pac-10,8-8-1 overall)
Arizona State brings in a balanced
offensive attack to Pape Field tonight
with four players tallying four or more
goals this season, including junior for
ward Elizabeth Bogus, who has four
goals and five assists on the season.
“Bogus gives us trouble,” Steffen
said. “It’s tempting to try a crazy
scheme (to defend) against them, but
we just need to play consistent.”
Oregon vs.
Arizona (14-4-0, 5-2-0)
The Ducks will look to spoil the
Wildcats’ chances for their first confer
ence title in Arizona history on Sunday.
Arizona is anchored by freshman
goalkeeper McCall Smith, who has
notched 10 shutouts this season and
leads the conference in save percent
age with .902, giving up nine goals
against 83 saves. Arizona is second in
the Pac-10 in goals against average,
giving up 0.49 goals per game.
Arizona is also second in the confer
ence in goals scored, two behind
UCLA with 35.
“We are going to have to execute
different things in both matches,” Stef
fen said. “We can’t keep letting people
exploit us on changes from defense to
offense and vice versa. ”
