Running back
J.J.Arrington
Running back
Terrence Whitehead
The Golden Bears have the perfect example of a well
oiled machine.
Running back J.J. Arrington averages 158 yards per game
and seven yards per carry. The senior has scored 11
touchdowns and netted 1,106 yards in seven games
this season.
“There will be times where he’s running full
speed, untouched five yards past the line of
scrimmage,” Oregon head coach Mike Bel
lotti said after watching Arrington on
film. “A back as big and as fast as he is
is very difficult to bring down.”
Arrington is three rushing touch
downs away from tying the
school’s single season record of
14. The senior set a single-season
school record last week by reach
ing 1,000 yards in only seven games,
one game faster than the previous mark of eight games, held
by Chuck Muncie (1975). Arrington has rushed for more
than 100 yards in all seven games this season.
The 5-foot-ll back set career and single-season records in to
tal rushing touchdowns at College of the Canyons in Santa Clari
ta, Calif. He now powers Cal’s rushing offense that averages 243.9
yard per game, which is best in the Pacific-10 Conference and
ninth in the nation.
“We felt like he had the ability in junior college,” Cal head
coach Jeff Tedford said. “As he has matured and learned the
speed of the game at this level, he really plays at a different
speed. There is no question, his ability level is very high.
He's entrenched in our offense. Now that he understands
everything that he is doing, he can play unconsciously.”
Thie freshman Marshawn Lynch is learning the ropes
while relieving Arrington late in games. He is No. 15 in the
conference with 42 yards per game.
— Stephen Miller
The emergence of Terrence Whitehead as a viable weapon in the
Oregon offense has given the Ducks a balanced attack that
has been a staple since the likes of Saladin McCullough
in the mid-90’s.
The junior running back from Crenshaw High
School in Los Angeles has rushed for more than
100 yards in four games this season, more
than any Oregon running back since Onter
rio Smith had seven in 2002. His four 100
yard games coincided with four of the
Ducks’ five victories this year.
Whitehead is now averaging 102.4
yards a game, which is good for third in
the Pacific-10 Conference, and he is one
of three running backs in the conference to
average more than 100 yards per game.
He rushed for a season-high 166 yards last month
in the Ducks’ comeback victory at Washington State,
and his three touchdowns against Arizona marked the
first time an Oregon running back had accomplished
that feat since 2002.
With his 131 rushing yards and 92 receiving yards
at Stanford, Whitehead came within eight yards of be
coming the second player in Oregon history to finish a
game with 100 yards rushing and 100 yards receiving.
The only player to do so was Bobby Moore (Ahmad
Rashad), who ran for 107 yards and caught seven passes
for 131 yards at UCLA in 1970.
Whitehead also has proven himself as one of Oregon’s
most productive receivers. His 34 catches rank second on
the team behind Demetrius Williams. His 1,182 all-purpose
yards rank him fourth in the conference.
For the year, Whitehead has scored eight touchdowns, in
cluding one in the Ducks’ rain-soaked comeback victory
against Stanford.
