tempts. Junior Evan Knudson has not
made a kick in two attempts this sea
son. Coach Gilbertson is looking for
accuracy on a consistent basis.
“We've missed three in a row now,
so I think we have to force the issue,"
Gilbertson said. “That job is in com
petition again this week, and like we
(always) do, we’ll chart all the kicks.
Evan's healthier now and hitting the
ball better. ”
Oregon knows how to win with
field goals, especially after last
week’s booting battle with Stanford,
so Washington will need to resolve
this issue.
Trio of new QB's
The Huskies are also juggling per
sonnel at another position during
times of uncertainty. As a team that
has produced many professional
quarterbacks, Washington is looking
for potential and guidance from three
new arms.
Junior Casey Paus made his first
career start in the season-opener
against Fresno State and thus far has
started four games and played in sev
en. This season, Paus has completed
59 passes in 133 attempts for 699
yards. He has thrown for three touch
downs and six interceptions.
Isaiah Stanback has played in three
games this season as a sophomore
and started last weekend against
USC. His biggest day of production
came against Oregon State when he
threw for 219 yards and two touch
downs on 11 tosses. Stanback has
passed for 256 yards and has only
been intercepted twice this year.
Arguably, the most inexperienced
of the group is redshirt freshman Carl
Bonnell. Bonnell has participated in
four games this season and started

He has completed 20 of 54 pass at
tempts for a total of 228 yards with
no touchdowns and four picks.
All three quarterbacks made their
first starts of this season, and each
suffered a loss. Bonnell is the only
one to see his team win a game in
which he stajted behind center.
Stingy defense
No opponent has converted a
fourth down attempt against Wash
ington this year in 11 occasions. To
no avail, opposing teams have tried
to squeeze a first down in five of the
seven games this season.
Washington’s defense has caught
many eyes and stopped many drives
in recent contests. The Huskies have
only allowed their opponents to score
a total of four times in 14 trips to the
red zone over the last two games.
They have evolved into the third-best
red zone defense in the league by al
lowing only 19 scores (11 TD’s, eight
FG’s) in 26 occurrences.
Defensive lineman Manase Hopoi
tied a school record by recording six
tackles for loss against USC. That
number was the most collected by a
Pac-10 player this season. The senior
leads the team with 19 tackles for
loss that add up to a total of 92 nega
tive yards. Eight of those stops were
quarterback sacks.
The Huskies’ trio of starting line
backers is ranked one of the best in
the Pac-10. Junior Joe Lobendahn has
a team-best 77 tackles and is third in
the conference with 11 tackles per
game. Junior Evan Benjamin sits at
No. 4 in the conference, averaging 9.6
tackles per game and sophomore
Scott White averages 8.6.
