Stanford heads
south to attempt
recovery at UCLA
After losing a fourth-quarter lead to Oregon last week,
the Cardinal gets ready to battle the surprising Bruins
BY SCOTTJ. ADAMS
FREELANCE SPORTS REPORTER
Pacific-10 Conference football has
reached its halfway point, and every
game is becoming the biggest game
of the season for teams.
The conference standings and
bowl projections continue to clear
up, leaving No.l Southern California
alone in first place. The TYojans take
their 16-game winning streak into
Pullman, Wash., this weekend to
play Washington State. Injury-prone
Stanford rolls into Pasadena, Calif., to
face UCLA in a game that could have
immense bowl implications. Arizona
continues its homestand in the desert
as Oregon State heads to TUcson,
Ariz., looking to continue its winning
ways after last week’s victory against
Washington State.
Stanford (4-3 overall, 2-2
Pac-10) at UCLA (4-3, 2-2)
Both teams come into this game
reeling in the wake of tough losses.
UCLA was on the verge of complet
ing an upset in Tempe, Ariz., but
couldn’t finish off Arizona State as
senior Sun Devil quarterback An
drew Walter threw six touchdown
passes to help top the Bruins 48-42.
On TUesday, Bruin head coach Karl
Dorrell spoke with the media and
emphasized how important it is to
finish a game strong.
“We were up 42-31 and in pretty
good position for an opportunity to
win the football game, and we didn’t
finish,” Dorrell said. “We did all the
things you need to do, but you need
to learn how to finish.”
UCLA is continuing to look more
and more like a quality football team,
but needs to avoid falling victim to a
late season slump like last year. Bruin
junior quarterback Drew Olsonhas
thrown 10 touchdown passes in the
last three games combined, and
sophomore tailback Maurice Drew
ranks fourth in the nation in all-pur
pose yards. On the other side of the
ball, middle linebacker Spencer
Havner is a Lombardi Award semi-fi
nalist and leads the Pac-10 in tackles
with 11.7 per game. The Bruins will
be hungry for a win this Saturday
when their Pac-10 neighbors from the
north visit the Rose Bowl.
Stanford faces a welcoming season
ending schedule which features three
of four games at home, but must first
contend with UCLA in Los Angeles.
In last week’s game against Ore
gon, the Cardinal literally fell a few
feet short of forcing overtime after
junior kicker Michael Sgroi’s 49
yard field goal attempt could not
reach the crossbar as time expired
in the fourth quarter.
The biggest loss for Stanford may
not have been the game, but the early
exit of starting quarterback Trent Ed
wards, who left the game after endur
ing a body-quaking hit by Robby
Valenzuela of Oregon.
Stepping in for Edwards was fresh
man T.C. Ostrander, who is sched
uled to start this weekend. Teevens
