Manase Hopoi
Manase Hopoi has been a bright spot on an otherwise miser
able Washington defense.
The defensive tackle leads the Pacific-10 Conference with eight
sacks and 19 tackles for loss. He holds a one-sack lead over Ryan
Riddle of California and Devan Long of Oregon. He also has a
healthy seven-tackle lead against Long in the tackles for loss cat
egory.
Former Arizona State defensive end Terrell Suggs holds
the Pac-10 record for most sacks and most tackles for loss
in a season with 24 and 31.5, respectively.
Other than Hopoi’s brilliance at end, the Husky de
for,se ranks ninth in total defense (378.4 yards per
une), ninth in run defense (188.3 ypg) and dead
last in scoring defense in the Pac-10, allowing a
whopping 30 points per game.
The senior is in his third year as a starter and
has excelled at both the tackle and end positions.
“I've always thought Manase was a better in
side player with the quickness in his hands, than
say an outside player where a lot of that is foot
speed,” Washington head coach Keith Gilbert
son said. “I think he's played well. He's cer
tainly having a nice career in terms of his
tackles for loss and sacks and the things he
brings to the defense.”
The Sacramento, Calif., native was de
clared ineligible to participate in games as a
freshman in 2001 as a partial academic
qualifier. Hopoi can regain the lost year
of eligibility if he is on track to gradu
ate in spring of 2005.
Hopoi also has 37 total tackles,
with 23 being of the solo variety,
and one pass defended.

Devan Long
Simply put, Devan Long gets to the football.
The junior defensive end, younger brother of for
mer Washington State standout Rien Long, has dis
played his talents not only as a pass rusher, but as a
solid run stopper as well.
Long leads the team in tackles for loss with
12 for 70 yards and sacks with six and a half
for 50 yards in 2004.
He had his string of seven straight games
with at least one tackle for loss snapped at
Washington State earlier this year. Long has
now recorded 30 tackles behind the line of
scrimmage for a combined loss of 156 yards in his
career.
He finished last year with 11.5 sacks, one and a
half away from tying the Oregon school record of
13, held by Ernest Jones back in 1993. His six and a
half sacks this year give him a tie for second place
in the Pacific-10 Conference and moves him into sev
enth on the school’s career sack list with 18.5.
"He’s a complete defensive end," Bellotti said. "He
does a great job in pass rush, but he's very capable of
stopping the run, and he has pride in his entire game. He's
not a one-dimensional player."
Long joins Haloti Ngata, Robby Valenzuela and Chri
Solomona to form a defensive line that could draw compar
isons to some of the great lines of the past, even the famous
“Gang Green” defense of 1994. Long has helped the Oregon
defense to third in rushing, passing and total defense in the con
ference in 2004.
"He's a true defensive end," Bellotti said, "and I would even
call him a defensive lineman. I think he would appreciate that
better."
