IN BRIEF
Iraqi rebels threaten
Japanese hostage
BAGHDAD, Iraq — Video posted
Tliesday on a militant Islamic Web
site in the name of Abu Musab al
Zarqawi’s group showed what it
claimed was a Japanese captive and
threatened to behead him within 48
hours unless Japan pulls its troops
from Iraq. Japanese Prime Minister
Junichiro Koizumi rejected the de
mand. "I won’t withdraw troops,”
he was quoted as saying by Japan’s
Kyodo news agency after receiving
news of the hostage threat.
New Bush guard
papers leave questions
WASHINGTON — Unearthed
under legal pressure, three-decade
old documents portray President
Bush as a capable and well-liked
Air National Guard pilot who
stopped flying and attending regular
drills two-thirds of the way through
his six-year commitment — without
consequence. The files, many
of them forced to light by Freedom
of Information lawsuits by The As
sociated Press, conflict with some of
the harshest attacks Democrats
have levied on Bush’s Vietnam-era
service, such as suggestions that
Bush was a deserter or absent with
out leave.
Climber on Mt. Rainer
buried in avalanche
MONROE, Wash. — The climbing
partner of a Monroe firefighter
killed in an avalanche on Mount
Rainier says he’s not angry that his
friend died.
Matt Little, who dug frantically
through the snow in an effort to res
cue his roommate, Aaron Koester,
said they felt exhilarated and close
to God in the hours before Sunday’s
avalanche.
“He was doing what he loved
to do,” Little said Tliesday at a news
conference at the fire station
in Monroe, about 25 miles north of
Seattle. “We were living life and
he wouldn’t have wanted it any
other way.”
Little, 23, and Koester, 21,
were roped together when the
avalanche hit.
Little’s head and one arm re
mained above the snow, but it took
him half an hour to dig himself out
before he could turn to his friend.
After finally reaching Koester, Lit
tle said he dug away enough snow
to know his friend had died and told
him: “ ‘Well buddy, I’ll see you in
heaven, but I gotta go.’”
He then climbed down to Camp
Muir, elevation 10,000 feet, and
used a radio to call for help, con
tacting a hunter near Naches who
called park rangers.
