Movies: Remake's changes
weaken plot's scare tactics
Continued from page 5B
Marcus Nispel didn’t seem to under
stand the tactics that made the 1974
original a hit. While the original uses
delayed violence and emphasis on
sound to create a truly tormenting
movie, the remake relies on special
effects and gore to evoke fear.
The remake begins like the origi
nal with a group of young adults
traveling to a Lenard Skynard con
cert in a van. They pick up a lost,
disturbed young woman on the side
of the dirt road. She orders the
group to turn the van around and
shoots herself in the back seat when
they don’t comply. This early dis
play of extreme violence in the film
kills any suspense that could have
made this remake worth watching.
Instead, it becomes yet another for
gettable teen scream flick.
Suspense, a main scare tactic of
classic horror flicks, makes these grit
ty classics more terrifying than new
special effects slashers and are a per
fect fit for a Halloween scare.

“It takes a lot out of

Haunting the corn maze
takes both time and effort.
The farm holds try-outs for
community members hop

30 people who work at the
maze every night.
Reiser said people came
out in full costume to fight
for the maze positions and
were handpicked by own

“Lori picks the people she thinks
can handle the long days,” TYuhn
said.
The 4-hour shift often starts with a
family dinner. A group of employees
gathers every night to feast on
Jensen’s home-cooked meals.
When the haunting hour strikes,
the employees take their assigned ar

MORE HALLOWEEN
Halloween dates back nearly 2,000 years, to
when Celts believed that on Oct. 31, the ghosts
of the underworld arrived to damage crops. In
the later 19th century, millions of immigrants
brought All Hallow’s Eve traditions to America.
