Artists' humility an added
bonus to hip-hop ability
MC Eyedea has turned
down record deals in order
to keep his sense of self
BY RYAN MURPHEY
PULSE REPORTER
Michael Larsen, a.k.a. Eyedea of
the MC and DJ super-team known as
Eyedea & Abilities, has bragging
rights. He virtually dominated the
competitive hip-hop circuit between
1997 and 2001, winning Scribble Jam
‘99, Blaze-Battle Chicago 2000, HBO
Televised Blaze-Battle World Cham
pionship and many others.
In addition to releasing two full
length albums with DJ Abilities,
Larsen has released his own self-pro
duced album, a scattering of EPs and
bootlegs and has made guest appear
ances with other artists such as Slug
(of Atmosphere). He has toured with
De La Soul, Atmosphere, The Roots
and has turned down major record
deals from some of the biggest names
in the music business. At 22 years old,
Larsen has an impressive list of
achievements, but to hear him tell it,
one might think they are only slightly
more significant than learning how to
tie your shoes.
“1 care about music and life and
being a good person,” Larsen said.
“Everything else is either one step
from meaningless or beyond my
realm of interest.”
It’s not uncommon for artists to
feign humility, but speaking to Larsen,
one gets the impression that this state
ment is more than just aloof posturing.
When asked about the offer from
Eyedea
& Abilities will
be performing
at the WOW
Hall at 8 p.m.
today.
Courtesy
P-Diddy that Larsen turned down, he
bluntly dismisses it as a story that has
been “embellished by media who care
more about that kind of stuff than I do.
The bottom line is that he wasn’t inter
ested in me; he was interested in what
he could make me.”
When talking business, Larsen’s
answers are concise and detached,
but as the conversation shifts to mu
sic, inspiration and fans, his tone be
comes warmer, his sentences longer
and the stories more elaborate.
Larsen explains that meeting his
fans is still one of the most amazing
parts of being on tour.
“Like when you meet this little
15-year-old kid after a show and you’re
not just like good music to him, you’re
THE music,” he said. “That shit just
sticks with me; I’ll be back at the hotel
room and still be thinking about it.”
Larsen, an accomplished freestyl
ist, has been known to have audience
members shout out a word for him to
freestyle off of, or pick two members
of the crowd out and stage a battle
between the two by taking each

conversations that all too often
lead to action. The results
of these conversations range
from competitive mustache
growing to illegal acts of urina
tion. One night found Andy
laying out a plan to get hired
as a manager at McDonald’s
so he could add “Me” as a prefix
to as many words as possible.
He smiled like a three-year-old
boy who had just caught a lizard
at the thought of telling some
body that they were Mcfired,
or asking someone what kind of
Mcskills they felt they brought to
the Mcteam.
At times I’ve told myself that
I’m too old for this kind of thing,
that I need to get new friends
who act their age. Instead of
quoting obscure Internet humor
and discussing a shared hatred
for Jeff Goldblum, I should com
plain about how much I hate
work and announce how wasted
I am. Instead of staying up all
night trying to get past the sixth
level of Marble Madness, I
should be having bad, drunken
sex with someone I don’t care
about. Then I think back to how
much fun I had climbing a tree
when I was ten, or how finding a
stick and really big rock to stand
on meant that I was booked for
the whole afternoon, and I step
on the gas with only ten miles
between me and two full-grown
men in diapers.
