Red Sox: Rally Monkeys triumphantly return
Continued from page 9
a three-run homer over the left-cen
ter field fence.
TYoy Glaus, MVP of the 2002 World
Series, hit Schilling’s second pitch in
the bottom half for a long home run.
Darin Erstad added a solo homer in
the seventh, and the Angels got anoth
er run on Schilling’s throwing error
and an RBI double by Glaus. Schilling
grabbed at his right ankle after watch
ing his throw to first bounce down the
right-field line, and stayed in for one
more batter.
Many in the crowd began waving
Rally Monkeys during the seventh.
They were all over the place during the
Angels’ postseason run two years ago.
The Red Sox got a run back in the
eighth on Doug Mientkiewicz’s two
out bunt single off Ramon Ortiz.
Slow-footed Bengie Molina lined a
single with two outs and a runner at
first in the Angels’ sixth. Right field
er Gabe Kapler threw to first, with
the ball sailing over first baseman
Millar’s head. The play prompted
laughter in the Boston dugout and
would have been close had the
throw been accurate.
David Eckstein followed with a
single to load the bases, but Dallas
McPherson grounded to second to
end the inning.
Glaus doubled to start the Angels’
second, but was stranded as
Schilling retired Jeff DaVanon, Moli
na and Eckstein.
The Angels threatened again in the
third, putting two on with one out. But
Vladimir Guerrero flied to right and
Garret Anderson grounded to short.
The Red Sox then put the game
away.
Roetman: Sosa needs to leave the Cubbies
Continued from page 9
with their pursuit of a World Series
championship. If the Cubs do trade
Sosa, however, a clause in his contract
will guarantee him another $18 mil
lion in 2006. While $35 million for
two seasons would be a spendy in
vestment for a home-run-hitter in
decline, Sosa’s marketability is
bound to be enough to lure a team
into taking on most, if not all, of his
f
giant contract.
While it’s hard to fathom Sosa play
ing for someone other than my
beloved Cubbies, the time has come
for the two to part ways. The North
Siders are no longer lovable losers, but
a team with great starting pitching, ca
pable of competing for a spot in the
postseason. Accepting defeat as long
as Sosa hits a meaningless, late-inning
homer is no longer an option.
Sosa’s departure is one of several
things that needs to happen in order
for the Cubs to make a run at the
2005 World Series.
I never thought this day would
come.
I’m ashamed to be a Sammy Sosa
fan.
