and having it be a
success are pretty
slim. But success
seems to be the
furthest thing
For those unfamiliar with the first
film, it concerned a chance meeting
between an American and a French
grad student aboard a train in Eu
rope. They fall in love over the course
of 14 hours in Vienna before she has
to leave on a train bound for France.
It ends with them promising to meet
in Vienna later that winter.
"Before Sunset" finds them both
meeting again in Paris further down
the road. The American, Jesse (played
by Ethan Hawke) is now a successful
writer who is just wrapping up a Euro
pean book tour. The French woman,
Celine (Julie Delpy) works for an en
vironmental organization. The film
takes place in a shorter time frame
than the first film, as Jesse and Celine
spend an afternoon together before
Jesse has to catch a flight back home.
This is not your typical romance, or
even your typical film. The entire
movie consists of Jesse and Celine's
conversation, with practically nothing
else happening during its 80-minute
running time.
This might sound boring, but the
intricacies of everyday conversation
are something Linklater has special
ized in since his earliest films. He has
a way of turning the most meander
ing conversations into philosophical
poetry while still making it sound so
real that you could have heard it

Pavilion is devoted entirely to local
Grange programs, and there are several
competitions in which competitors v.e

"We have about nine or ten animal
departments, which are judged on
quality and showmanship of the ani
mals," Matsushita said.
New animal acts this year include
the Desperado Horse Drill Team and
a horse dancing competition, which
is a freestyle event in which costumed
horses and riders choreograph a rou
tine to music of the rider's choice.
Horse dancing will take place on Sun
day, Aug. 22 at 2 p.m. in the Livestock
Pavilion and the drill team will per
form at 3 p.m. at the same location.
One of the fair's biggest draws is
the nightly concerts on the Bi-Mart
main stage. "One of the things that
make the Lane County Fair so special
is because we are able to bring some
pretty outstanding names," Matsushi
ta said. "Four of the five concerts sold
out last year."
Don Leber, the director of advertis
ing for Bi-Mart, made the decision to
sponsor the Lane County Fair more
than fifteen years ago. As a presenting
sponsor, Bi-Mart brings all of the
main stage artists — as well as a vari
ety of different exhibits and perform
ances — to the Lane County Fair.
"We used to be a daily sponsor, but
now we're out there in a much bigger
presence," Leber said. "It's one of the
best ways to give back to the commu
nity that supports us."
Rising country star Joe Nichols will
open the concert series on Tuesday,
followed by the Doobie Brothers on
Wednesday and the Temptations, fea
turing Dennis Edwards, on Thursday.
Country singer/songwriter Chris
LeDoux performs Friday and country
