economy in Oregon, they provide an
important retail venue for small grow
ers, according to the Oregon's Farmers'
Markets Association. The OFMA also
reported that the number of markets
statewide has doubled since 2000.
"Knowing how your food is grown
and who grows it is pretty rare in this
day and age, but at the farmer's mar
ket, that's commonplace," said Noa
O'Hare, Lane County Farmer's Market
director. "The grower is the seller."
The growers are generous, too, and
there are always lots of samples.
The Lane Country Farmers' Market
takes place onTbesdays from 10 a.m. to
3 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4
p.m. at East 8th Avenue and Oak Street,
and Thursdays from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at
the Lane County Fairgrounds. The
market at the Meridian runs Thursdays
from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. at 18th Avenue
and Willamette Street, and Al Fresco, at
the 5th Street Market, is on Fridays from
12 p.m. to 5 p.m.

roles. Spooner's grandmother, a mi
nor character in the film, is eerily
similar to Big Mama from "Soul
Food," and Dr. Calvin, supposedly
an intelligent, empowered female
character, doesn't know how to
shoot a gun. The buff,
impertinent black cop, the hot, smart
and wimpy woman, the skeptical
lieutenant, the evil corporate head
and the humanized machine are all
variations of stock characters. And
while the acting isn't terrible, it isn't
really good either.
If it were just another summer
blockbuster, the film would fulfill its
role as an entertaining science fiction
flick; however, like most adaptations,
Proyas' ambitious attempt to success
fully recreate a classic on film falls
flat. Science fiction lovers, especially
those who have read the book, will
be disappointed. Like so many other
"based on" films, this is another time
for audiences to boycott the movie
theater and head to the public library.

MONTRY

hadn't seen a woman naked since
birth. This, of course, makes no sense,
considering Clarkson is playing a hip
young Texas feminist with blond
streaks in her hair.
Yeah, I didn't get it either.
Next 10 minutes: The entire plot
slaps you in the face with a wet
salmon when Justin, "the mayor of
spring break," enters the scene, sport
ing such witty dialogue as "Dude, like
1 couldn't imagine myself with one
girl for, like, an entire day!" Hmm, do
you think the rest of the movie will be
about Justin's inability to commit un
til he meets Kelly, who somehow
manages to change him, but not be
fore a few tumultuous fights? I^et's
find out!
Ten beers later: Yeah, I was right.
Near the end: The rest of the movie
plays out like a music video — sort of
half musical, half fantasy beach island
where everybody dances in unison
and nobody weighs more than 95
pounds. In fact, a central theme to the
plot is a whipped cream bikini con
test, which hasn't shown its face on
the big screen since "Varsity Blues,"
undoubtedly for good reason. The
movie is fueled purely by hormones,
but ironically nobody actually man
ages, in an entire week of spring
break, to have sex. Oh, wait, my mis
take, there was that one scene where
Justin and his best friend, Brandon,
wipe each other down with whipped
cream in what can only be described
as the most homoerotic moment in
all of cinema.
All in all, the movie garnered $5
million, despite a score that sounds
like something written by a cocaine
addict in Orange County . Want a
sample? Here's a rap from the movie
by Brandon, a skinny white guy just
begging to be accepted — the kind of
guy who humps the legs of real hip
hop stars at B-movie parties. Here it is:
So dude you wanna pick up chicks ? I'll
give ya the secret.
You want mad phone numbers and
make them beg ya to keep it?
You'll be heartbreakin Betty and heart
bustin' (unintelligible)
Just follow me and Justin and soon
they'll be bustin'for you.
Now to impress these chicks you gotta
be smoother than eva'
No need to sweat, I'm your mentor,
I'm cleva'
The ones at the bar, and the ones
at the pool
The triplets Cammie, Sammie and
Tammy from my old high school
But it's cool cause I roll
Multiple chicks you'll be landin'
Just listen to Brandon
And soon they'll be standin' with you
You can leave them all smittin'
Names like honey and baby and Bon
ny and Katie
You listenin'? Cause now you're
a play a'
Just stack up the layers on your heart
and then sava!
This flavor of feelin
You gotta date 'em and leave 'em!
(unintelligible)
So if you, dear reader, can read that
and still have any willingness or desire
to watch this movie, then I feel for
you, you poor bastard.
