bar at 16 feet, but it felt close, so maybe at Trials," said Dragila, who won
the event at 15-5.
In other notable event victories, Maria Mutola won the 800 meters for her
12th straight win at Hayward Field with a time of 1:57.78. Mutola, a former
Springfield resident who now lives in South Africa, set the second best time
in the world this year.
Japan's Koji Murofushi also created headlines with his hammer throw
performance. Murofushi smashed the Hayward Field and meet records by
more than five feet when he threw 271-02. Five of Murofushi's six attempts

SPORTS BRIEF
Emeralds lose home opener
Opening night for the 2004 sea
son did not go as planned for the Eu
gene Emeralds.
Behind a three-run second inning
that included two home runs, the
Tri-City Dust Devils shut out the
Emeralds 5-0 in front of 5,233 at
Civic Stadium.
First baseman )oe Koshansky and
shortstop Pedro Strop hit two solo
home runs for Tri-City in the second
inning. Two batters later, catcher Luke
Sargent added an RBI single to give
the Dust Devils the lead for good.
Tri-City would add another run in
the ninth inning off an RBI single by
leadoff hitter Brett Spivey.
Eugene's best scoring threat came
in the first inning after the first three
batters reached base on an error and
two walks. However, the Emeralds'
number three, four and five hitters all
struck out to end the inning.
Eugene mustered only four singles
the rest of the way with no extra
base hits.
Tri-City starter Steven Thomas won
his first game of the year to move the
Dust Devils (2-2) to second place in
the Northwest League East Division.
The Emeralds (1 -3) dropped to last
place in the West Division and have
lost three straight games after winning
the season opener against Salem-Keiz
er 4-2 in 12 innings.
Emeralds manager Roy Howell
said his young players need to be
ready every game with the season
just underway.
"Any college kid has to come out
here and prove to himself that he
can play the game," Howell said be
fore the season. "What we have to
do as a team is become a team. You
got guys here coming in from every
walk of life."
Eugene continues its five-game
homestand against Tri-City tomorrow
starting at 7:05 p.m. at Civic Stadium.
The series ends on Friday.
