Once I got over 17-11, tilings started to really get rolling." Skipper wasn't the only Oregon athlete who found success at the Cal State Northridge-held meet. Eric Mitchum entered the weekend with the nation's second-best time in the 110 meter hurdles (13.50 seconds) and didn't disappoint. The Calumet City, 111., native won the event (13.72) by 0.14 seconds over UCLA's Anthony Golston, con tinuing an impressive sophomore campaign in which he broke the Ore gon record with a wind-legal time of 13.53 at the Texas Relays. "It was not my best time or per formance," Mitchum said, "but 1 tried to stay focused, and come back and get the win. I didn't worry about what ■J was ranked coming into today. I just tried to run my race, and today was still a good learning experience." Elsewhere, on the track, sophomore transfer A.K. Larwin is expected to earn an at-large bid by the NCAA committee based on her personal and sea son best (13-6 1/4) from the Pacific-10 Conference Championships two weeks ago, Smith said. Junior Sarah Malone earned her third NCAA in vite in the javelin throw and was Oregon's lone winner in any one single event. The Newberg na tive led throughout the competition and won based on her third attempt of 173-10 over Wash ington's Megan Spriesterbach (2nd, 167-3) and three-time Pac-10 javelin champion Inga Stasi ulionyte of USC (third, 166-2). "On my first throw (164-5), 1 had an awkward plant and kind of came down wrong and jiggled a muscle in my rib cage," Malone said. "1 figured that mark probably wouldn't hold up for the win, so I tried to relax it as much as I could and give it a few more tries." Malone downplayed the win, knowing her competitors had already qualified for the national meet. "First place wasn't that big a deal in reality," Malone said, "because 1 know Inga and others will be ready to really go after it at nationals." In the shot put, junior Bree Fuqua held onto fourth-place after her first throw (52-8 3/4) to claim her first NCAA bid. Over on the track, Laura 1 larmon also took home her first NCAA invite, placing third (16 min utes, 33.17 seconds) in the 5,000 meters. Her time rewrote her personal best (16:46.97) from the Stanford Invitational in late March. "1 knew from my workouts that 1 could quali fy," I larmon said. "After I nearly tripped in the last few laps, it took me a little while to regain my com posure and my rhythm. Once I settled down, I knew my foot speed could pull me through." I larmon is Oregon's only runner to qualify for the four-day NCAA Championships that begin June 9. Contact the sports reporter at alextam@dailyemerald.com. Erik R.
