everyone's been talking about that all
week," said Glavine, who outdueled
Johnson with 72/3 innings of shutout
ball in a 1-0 victory May 12 in Ari
zona. "Like Randy, I've never really
paid attention to my age as much as I
pay attention to my body. ... And I
think I've proved to people I have a lot
left in the tank."
So what is the biggest difference
between the Glavine who was 9-14
and never appeared comfortable in
his first season in New York in
2003, and the one who has opened
this season 6-2 with a 2.13 ERA to
remind everyone of the stellar re
sume he'd compiled over 16 sea
sons in Atlanta?
Or does it even really matter?
Glavine, who often battled umpires
and the QuesTec pitch analyzer last
season, credited home plate umpire
Larry Vanover with a consistent game
Sunday of calling balls and strikes.
He also threw props to pitching
coach Rick Peterson and catcher Ja
son Phillips for their plans of attack
against Colorado's lineup, even with
stars Todd Helton and Preston Wil
son sidelined.
Peterson likened the savvy
Glavine's ability to execute any game
plan to "(Joe) Montana running the
West Coast offense." And with
precision, Glavine pumped inside
change-ups to batters on both sides of
the plate, while spotting his fastball
and curve effectively throughout.
He retired the first 18 batters before
walking Denny Hocking to lead off
the seventh. Glavine made it look
easy, without requiring so much as
one extraordinary fielding play be
hind him to that point.
"That's the ultimate compliment of
how I pitch a game, that it looks easy.
But it's not easy. I'm busting my butt
as hard as Roger Clemens or Randy
Johnson, it just looks a little differ
ent," Glavine said. "If guys are making
routine plays, that means I'm hitting
my spots.
"If it looked easy, that's good. That's
what I'm looking for."

Today's Birthday (May 24). You're
a perpetual student. This year, your
assignment is to maintain stability
when all has turned to chaos. It's
not an impossible task. In fact, you
might find it fun. It's stimulating, too,
and it could lead to a fabulous part
nership.
To get the advantage, check the
day's rating: 10 is the easiest day, 0
the most challenging.
Aries (March 21-April 19) _ Today
is a 9 _ You're very lucky now, and
it's not just because you're so cute.
It's also because you're loved.
Agreements you make now have a
greater chance of working out well.
Don't hesitate any longer.
Taurus (April 20-May 20) _ Today
is a 7 _ Study and practice, prac
tice and study, over and over again.
By now, you should have a pretty
good idea of what's coming up
next, so prepare.
Gemini (May 21-June 21) _ Today
is a 7 _ Divvy up the loot you have
left and figure out what you still
need. School is almost over in one
place, but in another it's just begin
ning.
Cancer (June 22-July 22) _ Today
is a 7 _ You've done almost every
thing that you already knew how to
do. Now, take on a job that you
don't have the faintest idea how to
finish. Learn as you go along.
Leo (July 23-Aug. 22) _ Today is a
7 _ Good friends are worth more
than their weight in gold. You'll fall
into that category, too, if you take
time to find out what one of your
friends is worried about. You don't
have to solve the problem. Just lis
ten.
Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) _ Today is
a 6 _ That stack of stuff on your
desk demands your urgent atten
tion. You didn't mean to let it get
this far out of hand. Schedule time
to go through it over the next few
days. There's something useful in
there.
Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) _ Today is
an 8 _ By now you should have a
good idea of what to ask your team
to do. If you don't, they won't do
anything at all. You're the brains
behind the operation, remember?
Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) _ Today
is a 7 _ The stronger you become
physically, the more willing you are
to take on other responsibilities.
They don’t look so intimidating any
longer. They look like they might
even be fun.
Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) _
Today is a 7 _ Distant places are
always appealing. Set up your life
so that you can visit as many of
them as possible. If it's on busi
ness, deduct the expense. If it's
not, think of a way to make it busi
ness.
Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) _
Today is a 7 _ A small investment
in yourself could bring you great
rewards. Improve your efficiency
and try to make the job more fun.
Start checking out the latest tech
nology so that you'll recognize a
good deal.
Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) _ Today
is a 7 _ If you want to make a seri
ous commitment, you're coming up
on a good time. Tonight and tomor
row should be fabulous. Only make
promises that you fully intend to
keep.
Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) _ Today
is a 7 _ You may have a lot more
creativity than you ever imagined.
Now is a good day for it to come
out. Surround yourself with materi
als and see what happens.
