with Stiegeler for three years. Last year,
John and I competed with each other
every practice. That's something I did
miss a lot for the first half of the year. I
just changed the way I train this year and
I kind of like just having (throws coach)
Lance Deal and Sarah there most of the
time It's a good change."
Despite Stiegeler's absence, Jenk
ins hasn't been without challenges
this year.
"I can kick his butt at throwing ar
rows and he hates that" Malone said of
a training technique that javelin throw
ers use. "We hadn't thrown them since
we were in college, so we went and
bought a few and came out and threw
them and I crushed him. He was so
pissed that he had even taken the time
to buy them. He swore up and down
that he could throw 250 feet, and that
he did it in high school, but he's yet to
prove it. It's gotten to the point that he
"I can kick his butt
throwing arrows and he
hates that_He won't
even compete against
me because he
doesn't like to lose."
Sarah Malone
Oregon javelin thrower
won't even throw them anymore. He
won't even compete against me be
cause he doesn't like to lose."
With the regional qualifier
approaching, Deal said he has plenty
of confidence in Jenkins' ability to
make the NCAAs.
"Adam is a real student of the
event," Deal said. "He made up his
mind early in the season that he was
going to be successful."

REGIONAL
continued from page 13
The following day, the Ducks
sent both host Cal State Fullerton
and Oklahoma State packing, cre
ating the title match of Oregon
against the lone undefeated team,
Louisiana-Lafayette.
After a 9-2 Duck victory against
Louisiana, the two one-loss teams
had a 30-minute break before
they faced each other again —
with a berth to the Women's Col
lege World Series on the line.
Oregon lost the game, 6-4, but
the players who returned from last
season's squad are determined
that something similar won't hap
pen again.
"Our ultimate goal is the world
series," Harris said. "We have a
really positive attitude about the
whole thing. We're confident that
we can get there."
The easy road through Tallahas
see is four wins and no losses, while
the rougher path is five wins and
one loss. Either way, four more wins
than losses is what a team is looking
for in the bracket.
The winner of today's game will
play the winner of the South Flori
da-Ohio State matchup at 9:30 a m.
Friday. The losers of both first
round games will play each other at
5 p.m. today.
"I think we're about to go on a
roll," Arendsen said. "1 think that
we're going to be an incredibly
dangerous club coming in there."

TODAY'S BIRTHDAY (May 20).
You're quick and practical this year,
but learning to play by the rules isn't
your favorite thing to do. Be patient.
You’ll learn by doing, and some
times that means you'll lose what
you wanted to keep, it's a hard way
to acquire knowledge, but it's guar
anteed that you’ll never forget.
To get the advantage, check the
day's rating: 10 is the easiest day, 0
the most challenging.
Aries (March 21-April 19) _ Today is
an 8 _ Your luck is changing for the
better. You'll find it easier to learn
over the next several weeks. It’s up
to you to pick the subject to study or
practice. It should be something to
do with home improvements.
Taurus (April 20-May 20) _ Today is
a 7 _ For the next few weeks you'll
have a lot of chances to make
money. Figure out how, but don't
close the door on new opportunities.
This is no time for napping. You
snooze, you lose.
Gemini (May 21-June 21) _ Today
is an 8 _ Is something bugging you?
Is there something you feel guilty
about? Face it now or continue to
be tormented.
Cancer (June 22-July 22) _ Today is
a 6 _ This is a good time to clean
out your closets and get rid of stuff
you don't need. Make lists of things
you want to accomplish in the com
ing month. Clear space so that you'll
have a place where you can work.
Leo (July 23-Aug. 22) _ Today is a 7
_ Wear your best outfit and continue
to stand up straight. This is an
excellent day to make profits, good
impressions and friends, though not
necessarily in that order.
Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) _ Today is
a 7 _ You've been a decision maker
for ages, but you have a tendency to
let others take the credit. During the
next few weeks you'll be tested. You
can produce results on your own,
but can you accept the applause?
Answer: You'll get used to it.
Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) _ Today is
an 8 _ Put the finishing touches on
your plans. Prepare to venture into
unfamiliar territory. It's exciting, but it
can be frightening, too. A thin line
separates those two emotions. Be
brave. Ventures begun now end
well.
Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) _ Today
is a 6 _ For the next several weeks
you'll find it somewhat easier to deal
with financial matters. You have the
patience already, but now you'll also
acquire the skills. You can turn a lit
tle into a lot.
Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) _
Today is a 7 _ Conditions around
you have changed again, and this
time they've changed in your favor.
You’ll be able to rely more on others
during the next several weeks.
Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) _
Today is a 7 _ You've never under
stood the kind of love that's all frills
and lace. You're more the type for
work gloves and boots, and getting
dirt in your hair. This isn't a bad
thing if you're with the right person.
In fact, it's wonderful.
Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) _ Today
is an 8 _ It's as if you're coming out
into the sunshine after a long hiber
nation. You've made some big deci
sions. Now, celebrate what you’ve
accomplished and forget about what
you didn't.
Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) _ Today
is a 7 _ You're going from the
research phase to the application
phase. You'll get a chance to put a
lot of your favorite ideas into prac
tice. They won't all work, of course,
but don't let that inhibit you.
