"I felt will extend their sea
sons with the NCAA Individ
uals in Athens, Ga., begin
ning May 24.
Men's season
conies to a close
'Fhe Oregon men came away
scratched and torn from their
trip to Oxford, Miss.
Twenty-second ranked Van
derbilt was just good enough
to knock off the Ducks, 4-3,
ending Oregon's season.
The Commodores took the
doubles point to start off Satur
day. They then proceeded to
win all three full matches. Ore
gon earned the three points via
suspended sets: Vanderbilt had
already won the match, and
even though Sven Swinnen (7
5, 1-4) and Manuel Kost (6-4,
5-2) were essentially in control,
they were not allowed to finish.
Arron Spencer was also in
play at the time of the suspen
sion, but was down to Vander
bilt's Lewis Smith, 6-4,4-3.
"Vanderbilt is a good
team," Oregon head coach
Chris Russell said. "I felt we
played well enough to com
pete, but just didn't have the
firepower to pull ahead. 1 re
ally think that was a positive
experience for our players
and with only one senior
leaving, it will give us solid
momentum leading into
next year."
The Ducks finished the sea
son 9-11. Swinnen is set to
head to the NCAA Individual
Championships, beginning
May 26 in Tulsa, Okla. Kost
may also attend but is cur
rently an alternate.

Clemens denied for eighth win
HOUSTON — Mike Piazza entered the
clubhouse as a replay of his two-out, two
strike homer in the ninth inning flashed on a
television overhead. "Shock and awe, baby,"
Tom Glavine shouted in a jubilant room.
With the Mets one strike from becoming
Roger Clemens' eighth victim in eight starts
since joining the Astros, Piazza ripped a
two-run homer to right-center off closer Oc
tavio Dotel. The Mets won, 3-2, in 13 in
nings when Jason Phillips went deep
against Brandon Backe.
"Any time you've got the closer out there,
any time you get out of the alligator's jaw or
whatever you want to call it, it's a great feel
ing," Piazza said after spoiling the Rocket's
bid to become the first pitcher since Pedro
Martinez in 1997 to win his first eight starts
of the season.
Phillips called it the most emotional Mets
homer since Piazza's blast at Shea off Steve
Karsay in the first game back after Sept. 11. Pi
azza called that hyperbole — "it sounds like
he's a little excited," he said — but the long
ball cemented a confidence-building, 5-4
road trip. After dropping two games in Ari
zona, the Mets (18-20) won four of five
while facing a fearsome fivesome: Randy
Johnson, Brandon Webb, Roy Oswalt, Andy
Pettitte and Clemens.
"I'm just real proud of the guys. Everybody
wrote us offafter the start of the trip," said Art
Howe, who watched the dramatics from var
ious rooms in the clubhouse after being
ejected in the sixth inning.
Whether Piazza should have been in posi
tion to tie it was debatable. With Eric Valent
on second and two out, Astros manager Jimy
Williams went to the mound to discuss walk
ing Piazza to pitch to Todd Zeile. Dotel want
ed to face Piazza and Williams agreed. "He's
the tying run, not the winning run," the man
ager said of die ill-fated decision.
The ageless Clemens,who lowered his
ERA to 1.72, blanked the Mets for seven in
nings, striking out 10 and allowing only two
hits. The first came on pitcher Matt Ginter's
liner to right in the third in his first major
league at-bat. "I closed my eyes and swung,"
Ginter said. The other came on Zeile's in
field single four innings later.

Horoscope by Linda C. Black
Today's Birthday (May 17). From
your position of authority, you can
see what's going on. Guide the oth
ers gently this year, especially the
ones who sign your checks. True,
you're smarter and much more
sensible than they are, but you
don't have to make lots of noise. In
fact, that would blow your cover,
wouldn't it? Smile as you rake in
the bucks.
To get the advantage, check the
day's rating: 10 is the easiest day, 0
the most challenging.
Aries (March 21-April 19) _ Today
is a 5 _ Perseverance is a virtue
you should develop. You're a natu
ral sprinter, but now, prove you're a
good long-distance runner. It's not
that much farther, actually, but keep
at it until you're finished.
Taurus (April 20-May 20) _ Today
is a 9 _ You're strong, and wise,
and you're going in the right direc
tion now. You're loved, and things
should settle into a nice routine.
Make choices that will make you
happy for a long time.
Gemini (May 21-June 21) _ Today
is a 6 _ The weight of the world is
on your shoulders. Or is it all inside
your head? Either way, concen
trate. The more tasks you complete,
the lighter you'll feel.
Cancer (June 22-July 22) _ Today
is an 8 _ Meetings should go well,
especially when financial subjects
are being discussed. Stick with
what you have. It's not a good time
to expand. And it won't be a good
time for several months.
Leo (July 23-Aug. 22) _ Today is a
5 _ You may worry that you're in
too deep, that you can't cope with
this much responsibility. It's tempo
rary. You'll get over it as soon as
you see the tat paycheck that goes
with this assignment. Grow into it.
Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) _ Today is
a 9 _ Distant horizons beckon, and
nothing else seems to matter. Put
your worries on hold for a while
and at least let your imagination
wander. Odds are good you can get
away, and that would be sweet.
Libra (Sept 23-Oct. 22) _ Today is
a 5 _ Put dreams on hold and con
centrate on paying bills. If you give
it your full attention, it won't take
long. Then, do cost estimates and
projections just for the fun of it. The
next few days are good for math.
Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) _ Today
is an 8 _ Settle down for a while
and make do with what you have.
Leave your savings in the bank. All
you need is a little elbow grease.
Maybe not much of that, either.
Your imagination is your best tool.
Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) _
Today is a 4 _ You're inundated
with work for the next few days, so
get used to it. There's no point
complaining. You've brought it on
yourself. You're not doing this for
the money, so you might as well do
it for love.
Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan 19) _
Today is a 10 _ There's so much
love in the air right now, it's hard to
see anything else. Go ahead and
make the commitment. If you
already have, make it again. Let
yourself be swept away.
Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) _ Today
is a 5 _ Stability is very important
to you and your family. Whatever
you do to your personal space,
make sure it's built to last. That
goes for the things you buy, too.
Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) _ Today
is a 9 _ Let your thoughts about
household changes simmer on the
back burner. You still have a lot of
details to think about. Meanwhile,
continue to study a fascinating sub
ject. This information will prove use
ful later, in a myriad of ways.
