FLOOD
continued from page 1
Junior English major Laura Kings
bury, whose vehicle suffered severe
flood damage, said she was forced to
crawl into the vehicle through the back
hatch when she got to the scene.
"I tried to start it and it died," she
said. "I wanted to cry because I love my
car so much. The floor mats were float
ing on 4 inches of water."
Eyster said Eugene Water and Electric
Board workers arrived at around 10
a.m. and shut off several of the water
valves near the broken main at about
10:30 a.m.
Additionally, the road was blockad
ed from East 19th to 13th avenues
along Agate Street, and East 15th Av
enue was blockaded up to the Bower
man Building. The intersection re
opened at around noon, but the section
of 15th Avenue to Bowerman remained
closed while EWEB excavated the street
to investigate the cause of the break.
Bob Springer, the administrator on
duty for University Facility Services,
reported that water was also shut off
in several of the science halls, includ
ing Willamette, Cascade, Klamath and
Huestis, but he added the situation
was not dangerous.
"It just causes the normal inconven
iences," he said. "Fire sprinklers systems
are down, so we'll have fire watches."
EWEB Water Distribution Supervisor
Harold Summers said he thought the
break was possibly caused by deteriora
tion of the pipeline or sediment,
adding that the last two weeks have
been unusually dry.
He said, however, that the cause
would not be known until after the in
vestigation was complete. "We don't
know the magnitude or nature of the
failure," he said.
Summers couldn't comment on
who would be liable for the damage
done to parked cars and University
property. As of Sunday evening, water
remained unavailable in the Walton
and Hamilton complexes.
