Ducks at Stanford
The Oregon women began
their 2004 spring season
at the Stanford Invitational

The rebuilding process for the Ore
gon women's track and field team be
gins.
In the program's first year under
head coach Martin Smith, the Ducks
traveled down to Stanford, Calif., for
their second meet of the 2004 season
at the Stanford Invitational.
With recruitment scaled back the
past couple
seasons for the
women, Ore
gon returns
many key
players, in
cluding red
shirt junior Sarah Malone. Malone,
who sat out last year, placed second
overall in javelin with a mark of 167
feet, 9 inches. She finished first
among collegians behind the unat
tached first-place finisher, Erica
Wheeler at 175 feet.
Malone said at the Oregon Preview
meet two weeks ago that she is happy
to return to competition but wants to
ease herself back into the mix.
"I haven't been out here for almost
two years, so it's good to be back out,"
Malone said. "If I can throw as well as
I did, I would be happy. I don't want
to open up too early, so hopefully this
isn't too much of a big deal." Fellow
redshirt junior Rachael Kriz said be
fore the meet that she hoped to post a
Pacific-10 Conference qualifying
mark at 147 feet in the javelin.
Kriz, a Toledo native, missed her
mark by less than 10 feet. She ended
at eighth place in the event after post
ing a regional qualifying mark at 137
2. Kriz also placed 18th in the high
jump at 5-6.
The Ducks were also led by junior
Bree Fuqua with her top-five finishes in

the shot put and discus events. Fuqua,
who transferred from Wisconsin after
three years, ended at fourth place in the
shot put with a throw of 46-10.25. In
discus, she took third at 158-9.
Senior Jill Hoxmeier finished in
tenth place in the discus event at 147
8. In her last year at Oregon,
Hoxmeier said she wants to keep im
proving on her discus and hammer
throws as the season progresses.
"I just want to keep throwing far,"
Hoxmeier said two weeks ago. "I just
want to get better marks."
In other field events, the triple
jump proved to be one of the best
events for the Ducks.
Junior Clarice Hayward-Lee said
before the meet that she would like to
achieve a jump of at least 40 feet. She
slightly missed that goal but finally-at
tained a new wind-legal personal best
with a mark of 39-3.75. The jump
earned her a fifth-place finish in the
event.
Hayward-Lee had compiled many
farther distances last season that were
negated because of strong tailwinds at
more than two meters per second.
Hayward-Lee, a Bellevue, Wash., na
tive, eclipsed her previous personal
best wind-legal mark of 39-1 when
she was in high school.
Fellow junior Maegan Traver also
got a triple jump outdoor personal
best of 38-2 that gave her a fourth
place finish. Traver overcame her
previous personal best by 2 1/4
inches.
The distances portion of the compe
tition was led by redshirt junior Laura
Harmon, who finished fourth in the
5,000-meter race at 16 minutes, 46.97
seconds. She beat her personal best by
26 seconds from her sophomore year.
The time allowed Harmon to meet
Pac-10 and regional standards.
The women continue action when
a selected group heads to the Texas Re
lays meet in Austin on March 31.
