LAST CHANCE
continued from page 5
record a win in Pac-10 play and are
looking to do so tonight.
Oregon has come out victorious
in the last 21 seasons against Port
land State, a mark dating back to
the 1987-88 season.
Although these two teams do
not share a storied history over the
years, they share some similar ex
periences heading into the final
meet of the season.
The Vikings have been shut out
five times this year; Oregon has
been shut out three times.
The Ducks' lone victory came
against Army, while Portland State
topped Simon Fraser Jan. 16.
The last time these two teams
met in Portland, Oregon dominat
ed the match, 42-0, last season. It
was Oregon's first shutout since
the 1981-82 season.
As these Ducks know, each year
brings new wrestlers and new re
sults. Records fall by the wayside,
especially considering the biggest
thing on the line tonight isn't so
much a first conference victory
but pride.
Oregon head coach Chuck Kear
ney a week ago said the team's
preparations would begin to move
toward the Pac-10 Conference
Championships and then the
NCAA Tournament.
Oregon will have virtually no
time off since it last wrestled in the
second Civil War of the season
Sunday against the Beavers.
The Ducks will be coming off
only two days' rest, something
they have done only a few times
this season.
Oregon is 49-23-6 against the
Vikings all-time.
After tonight's match, Oregon
will have nearly two weeks of prac
tice before heading south to
Tempe, Ariz., for the Pac-10 tour
nament Feb. 29 to March 1.
The Pac-10 tournament will give
individual Ducks the opportunity
to qualify for the NCAA tourna
ment March 18-20.
Currently the Ducks have six
wrestlers ranked in the Pac-10, in
cluding senior Jason Harless, who
is sixth in the 133-pound division.
Joey Bracamonte climbed to fourth
in the 157-pound class, while Luke
Larwin stayed at fourth in the 165
pound class. Larwin is followed by
Dustin Fisher, who is seventh in
the 184-pound class, and Jake
Leair is sixth in the 197-pound
class. Freshman Cody Parker
moved up to fourth in the heavy
weight division.
Although Oregon is wrestling
for pride and that lone Pac-10 vic
tory, only two matches are ab
solute musts in wrestling.
"Pac-10's and NCAA are must
win situations," Kearney said.

BRIEF
continued from page 6
institutional control shows that his
client and others relied on the ad
vice of the LAV athletic department.
"Certainly, the anvil has been
dropped on the university," Sulkin
said, citing a passage in the allega
tions that says the UW "failed to
ensure that its coaching staff mem
bers and athletics department staff
members understood and put into
practice the correct application of
NCAA legislation regarding gam
bling activities."
Sulkin said the NCAA's allega
tions do not accuse Neuheisel of
"knowingly violating" an NCAA
rule. A copy of the NCAA charges
obtained by The Seattle Times de
scribes Neuheisel's betting activities
without referring to them as know
ing or unwitting.

Rometra Craig has helped put USC in a position to take over first place in the Pac-10.
The Trojans take on No. 10 Stanford Thursday in Palo Alto.
PAC-10
continued from page 5
Craig and Meghan Gnekow have
helped keep the opposition's focus
off Hoffman. The duo has com
bined to average 18.9 points and 7.9
rebounds per game.
Each player elevated her play in a
game against Arizona State last Thurs
day. The trio combined for 51 points in
a 65-50 win over the Sun Devils.
"My teammates make me have no
pressure," Hoffman told the Daily
Trojan after the game. "They step up
just like (Gnekow) and (Craig)
stepped up tonight."
A win by Stanford would give the
Cardinal the inside track to a Pac-10
title. A win by USC, and things get
very interesting between the Trojans,
Cardinal and Wildcats.
Hot streak
UCLA is smoking hot.
The Bruins (14-10, 9-6) are making
a run at an NCAA Tournament berth,
having won their last five games.
UCLA last lost to Oregon Jan. 29.
The catalyst for the UCLA run has
been freshman Noelle Quinn. The
6-foot guard has scored at least 20
points in each of the last five games,
setting a Bruin freshman record. The
best performance during the streak
came Thursday when Quinn's 31
points helped UCLA defeat Arizona
87-68.
Quinn has reached double figures in
15 consecutive games and has become
the Bruin's go-to-option on offense.
"I remember during the recruiting
process that I told (head coach) Kathy
Olivier that 1 wanted to make an im
pact early on, and I didn't want to wait a
couple of years," Quinn told the Daily
Bruin. "This is what I asked for, and I
have it right now. I just want to take ad
vantage of it."
Two of UCLA's final three games
are against Stanford and USC, mak
ing it difficult for the Bruins to end
their season on an eight-game win
ning streak. If UCLA does pull off
the upsets, however, it has an out
side chance of finishing third in the
conference and getting a favorable
draw in the Pac-10 Tournament.
