W hen Oregon quarterback Kellen
Clemens was a senior at Bums
High School, he was one of
the most heralded recruits in Ducks' his
tory. Called the fifth-best quarterback as
a senior by The Sporting News, Clemens
came to Oregon after passing for 8,646
yards in his high school career. Now a
redshirt sophomore, Clemens has begun
to assert himself as the definite quarter
back of the future for the Ducks. In Ore
gon's wins over California and UCLA in
recent weeks, Clemens has taken con
trol of the offense
at just the
right
mo
ments. His confi
dence never wavers,
win or lose, and he
could be one of the na
tion's best signal callers by his
senior season in Eugene. He has
thrown for 1,912 yards on the strength
for 236 passing. Clemens has also thrown
12 touchdown strikes while being picked oft
seven times. He will be a big key if Oregon is
to defeat Oregon State on Saturday.

Oregon State quarterback Derek Ander
son has been a steadying force for
the Beavers in the team's seven
wins, but when they suffer, he suffers as
well. Rated die eighth-best quarterback
in the nation by The Sporting News his
senior season at Scappoose High School,
Anderson has been given more time be
hind center than his counterpart
Kellen Clemens. Last season, his
first as a full-time starter at
Oregon State, he
passed for 3,313 yards
and 25 touchdown
passes. He was,
however, picked off
13 times, showing
that his reads of op
posing defenses were not
correct. This year, he has
just as inconsistent at times. He
has thrown for 19 touchdowns, but in
372 passing attempts, has been intercept
ed 17 times. That amounts to one pick
every 22 passes or so — almost two per
game. If he can remain steady against
the Ducks — and if Steven Jackson
can establish the Beavers' running
attack — Oregon will be in for a
long day. If the Ducks can get
consistent reads on his pass
es, it will be another two
years before
gets a win at Aytzen Sta
dium. The Beavers
haven't won there
since 1993.
