long-range — 50 yards or more —
kicks.
UCLA answered with a 37-yard
field goal, Medlock's second success
fill kick. He also missed a 44-yard
field goal and a 32-yard attempt dur
ing the game.
In the second quarter, Clemens
found sophomore tight end Tim Day
for an 18-yard touchdown pass, giving
Oregon all the scoring it needed in the
game. The Ducks led, 31-6, at the half.
In the second half, Oregon's de
fense simply needed to hold the Bru
ins. In just one game this season — a
46-16 win against Washington — the
Bruins scored more than 24 points.
The defense did just that, continu
ing to chase down Olson. Defensive
end Devan Long led the line with
three tackles for loss, including two
sacks. His teammates added six tack
les for loss, including four sacks. "I
think it was great to get those scores
from offense, defense and special
teams early on," Bellotti said. "At half
time, I said, 'Guys, just make sure you
have fun in the second half.'"
For the first time this season, quar
terback Jason Fife didn't replace
Clemens in the first half. Fife came
into the game for the final two Ore
gon drives of the game, when Oregon
had virtually sealed the deal.
Clemens finished the game with 21
completions on 27 pass attempts for
183 yards and two touchdowns.
The Bruins' 91,500-capacity Rose
Bowl had 56,083 fans in attendance.

to hit 45 percent from behind the arc
and the only call for three in the key
in an Oregon game was on LSU.
The tough physical play of LSU that
Oregon faced on Sunday was some
thing the Ducks need to prepare to bat
tle; the road that lies ahead has eaten
teams alive before, and the Pacific-10
Conference is a wild one on the court.
The leaders on the floor for the
weekend — Kraayeveld, Andrea Bills
and Corrie Mizusawa — worked over
the competition. In-turn, Bills and
Mizusawa were voted to the all-tour
nament team while Kraayeveld was
named tournament MVP.
Kraayeveld led the team with a
combined 51 points, showing team
mates and fans that she has recovered
from the staph infection in her knee last
season. Twenty-seven of those points
came from behind the three-point line.
Mizusawa's 13 assists in Saturday's
game were one away from tying Ore
gon's single-game record for assists.
"There are lots of numbers to look
at," Oregon head coach Bev Smith said
Sunday. "But the biggest number is
that there are 14 young women com
mitted to doing what we have asked
them to do and to doing it together."
Thirteen of them will play this sea
son, while freshman Kaela Chapde
laine takes a medical redshirt year.
Guards Chelsea Wagner and Kayla
Steen, both injured before exhibition
play, were suited up for Sunday's
game, although they didn't play. For
ward Jessica Shetters is expected back
on the court Saturday at Gonzaga.
With the full return of their team
mates, the Ducks should make noise
this season. With a 2-0 start, Oregon
has its first kick of momentum.
"We're really excited about this
win, but we have to set a standard
now for our team — how we play
every single game — and don't let it
down," Bills said.
This momentum — a champi
onship in their first tournament of
the season and an upset of the No. 9
team — should carry the Ducks into
their next few games, which in turn
would give the team a running start
into the season.

coach Sue Gunter said. "Kraayeveld
was unbelievable. (She was) just
terrific."
LSU made things interesting late
in the second half when the Tigers
implemented a full-court press. The
pressure seemed to rattle Oregon
and helped cut the Ducks lead to
63-54 with just over four minutes
to play.
"I think we got a little flustered by
the press," Kraayeveld said. "We've
been working on the press, but
(LSlJ's) is a little different than what
we've been working on in practice."
Oregon responded to the pres
sure when junior point guard
Corrie Mizusawa dished to junior
center Andrea Bills, who converted
a lay-up and was fouled, sending
i’" 1 —. — 1
the Mac Court crowd of 3,355 to an
uproar. Bills completed the three
point play, giving the Ducks a 66
54 lead with 3:45 left.
Bills finished with 21 points, on
9 of 11 shooting, and grabbed
seven rebounds.
Despite quality offensive per
formances from Kraayeveld and
Bills, it was Oregon's defense that
was most impressive. The Ducks
held sophomore guard Seimone
Augustus to 22 points on 11 of 24
shooting. Last season's national
freshman of the year was constant
ly hounded by Kraayeveld and
other Oregon defenders.
"She's a tremendous player,"
Smith said of Augustus. "I thought
we did a really good job of not let
ting her get out and run. We knew
she was going to score on us, but
we wanted her to have to work
every time."
Along with Kraayeveld being
named tournament MVP, Mizusawa
and Bills also earned all-tourna
ment team honors, along with
Augustus, Valparaiso's Katie Boone
and Villanova's Liad Suez.
Oregon also defeated Valparaiso
60-47 on Saturday. Kraayeveld led
the Ducks with 25 points, while
Mizusawa dished out 13 assists —
one short of tying a school record.
The Ducks received a scare late in
the first half when Mizusawa land
ed on her left hand after being
called for a charge. She stayed down
in pain, but returned to action with
a jammed left index finger.
"I thought I might have broken
something," Mizusawa said. "It's a
little sore, but I'll be all right."
