"We knew Sarah was going to be
a finisher," Ferreira said. "I'm very'
pleased with her growth and devel

conference."

Kelly Russell needs only 14 kills to
reach a total of 500 for her career.
The sophomore middle blocker
leads Oregon in kills with 197 and
kills per game with 3.23, while hit
ting at a.265 clip.
Fan support
Ferreira said earlier in the season
that Washington State was home to
the best volleyball atmosphere in the
Pac-10. The Cougars drew 1,789 fans
for Friday's match against Washing
ton at Bohler Gym. It was their largest
crowd of the season.
Pac-10 powers
Five Pac-10 teams can be found in
the top 10 of this week's USA To
day/AVCA Coaches poll, including
No. 1 USC, No. 6 Stanford, No. 7
California, No. 9 UCLA and No. 10
Washington. It is believed to be the

in the top 10 since the early 1980s.

You'd have to figure that I larring
ton's rating would've been higher for
simply stepping on the field with his
uniform up to league standards.
On the season, his passer rating is
a somewhat — remember the key
word, "somewhat" — respectable
56.8, which is actually better than
Philadelphia's Donovan McNabb.
I lowever, that figure doesn't even
place I larrington in the top-25 quar
terbacks of the NFL. Likewise, it puts
him at 14th on the NFC list — out of
16 quarterbacks.
Meanwhile, Palmer has yet to step
on the field for the Bengals. He has,
however, been given an opportunity
by Cincinnati management to leam
the system and stay away from the
bumps and bruises that Jon Kitna will
absorb as the team's starter.
Harrington isn't so lucky. 1 le's be
ing blamed for what ails the Detroit
offense, the Detroit media is coming
down hard on him and the optimism
he has shown throughout the season
has got to be waning.
Harrington and the Lions visit
Chicago next week at Soldier Field.
Will it be 1-6, or 2-5?

suit and look for programs to expand
the conference; however, it has said it
will not follow the Adantic Coast Con

dominoes. There are no plans to ex
pand the conference to more than the
10 teams that currently play in the con

The conference hasn't said any
thing after the recent news, but Pac
10 commissioner Tom Hansen told
the Los Angeles Times on Sept. 24
that nothing is in the works.

Horoscope by Linda C. Black
TODAY S BIRTHDAY (Oct. 21).
Finish up old tasks this year, espe
cially those that require study. Don't
worry about the outcome yet. It will
be different than what you expect.
To get the advantage, check the day's
rating: 10 is the easiest day, 0 the
most challenging.
ARIES (March 21-April 19) _ Today is
a 7 _ Work has an ugly way of intrud
ing on your playtime now. If you can't
change your circumstances for a
while, see if you can change your
attitude. Grow stronger through serv
ice
TAURUS (April 20-May 20) _ Today is
an 8 _ Watch out for a growing temp
tation to spend more than you
should. It’s good to teach a child
about deferring gratification.
GEMINI (May 21-June 21) _ Today is
a 6 _ You and a loved one may dis
agree about household arrange
ments. Try to work out a compromise,
perhaps with a brand-new option.
CANCER (June 22-July 22) _ Today
is a 7 _ Revising procedures is good
because it eventually makes you
more efficient. However, it could
make the job take longer at first, as
you're acquiring new skills.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) _ Today is a 7
_ Although there are indications of
your increased prosperity, don't
spend it as fast as you get it. A treat
for a loved one can wait.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) _ Today is
a 7 _ Just when you get one mess
straightened out, another one devel
ops. You're both strong and lucky
now, so don't worry. You'll think of
something.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) _ Today is
a 6 _ All of a sudden, your own obli
gations take priority. You need to
recheck a lesson you thought you'd
learned. There's a bug to work out.
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) _ Today
is a 7 _ Friends give you lots of sym
pathy and several good ideas. Ask
them to help you find ways to achieve
your goals at less of an expense.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec 21) _
Today is a 6 _ Someone who wants
to boss you around may have your
best interests at heart. He or she
might also help keep you from mak
ing an awful mess.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) _
Today is a 7 _ Although you're dis
covering places to be and lots of new
things to do, don't embark on a far
flung adventure yet. An old obligation
comes first.
AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb. 18) _ Today
is a 5 _ This time, a friend's sugges
tion needs closer evaluation. He or
she isn't that good at detailed analy
sis, so lend a hand.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) _ Today
is a 7 _ Don't get into an argument
with a person you might need. Even if
this guy's a jerk sometimes, you can
still be friends.
