VOLLEYBALL

Five of Oregon's last eight losses have come to top 15
teams. Despite taking their lumps from older, more experi
enced teams, the Ducks won't shy away from competing and
learning from the nation's elite.
"We love it," sophomore Kelly Russell said. "We all knew
that this is how it is coming in and this is what we all want.
We don't want to play teams that aren't good.
"We want to be up there and striving for the best, because
that's what we want to be."
The Ducks have yet to win a game against a Pac-10 opponent
and have lost 12 of their last 13 matches after starting 2-1.
The Ducks travel to Arizona for matches against the
Wildcats on Thursday and Arizona State on Friday. They
will then return home for matches against UCLA, USC and
Oregon State starting Oct. 23.

In overtime, sophomore Mele French beat two de
fenders up field at 2:25 to give Oregon the victory.
"Lindsey, Nicole and also Mary (Etter) really helped
get the team back into it during our halftime talk, and
we just took it one goal at a time," Steffen said. "Mele
asserted herself all game long, and her winning shot
was a truly great run with a natural touch on the shot *
Oregon State head coach Steve Fennah was dis
gusted with the officiating.
"It was a good game," Fennah said in the Oregon
State press release Friday. "As a coaching staff, we've
never been in the situation before where we don't
really know what to tell our players. They were to
tally in control of the game, and an official decides
he's going to change the course of the game.
'I hate to say the referee affected the game, but I
think in this case, it's justified."
Oregon edged the Beavers 28-11 in shots, only al
lowing one in the second half, and 13-2 in comer
kicks. Oregon State was flagged for more fouls, 23-13.
Goalkeeper Domenique Lainez recorded three
saves in the victory. For Oregon State, goalkeeper
Melissa Onstad recorded eight saves, six of them
coming in the first half.
Oregon continues conference play this weekend
when the Ducks head north to face 2002 NCAA
Tournament veterans Washington State on Friday
and Washington on Sunday.

l-yard run with 49 seconds left in the first half.
"We need to figure out what's wrong with the of
fense and get back on track, * Clemens said. “Today, the
first two series were definitely not impressive on my
part That contributed. We played with a lack of luster
and that was largely in part to my two picks. *
Terrence Whitehead led the Ducks with 78 yards
rushing on 19 carries. Fife wasn't far behind with
eight rushes for 69 yards. As a team, Oregon gained
159 yards on the ground in 33 attempts.
The Ducks have a bye next week, and even though
they have to sit on the loss for more than a week, the
extra rest may be needed.
Oregon returns to play Oct. 25 when Stanford
visits Autzen Stadium in the Ducks' 2003 Home
coming game.
