A Neighborhood Restaurant for all of Eugene
by Michelle Chan and Mike Kirk
Do you remember that certain restaurant that you would
go to when you were a kid? The one where your parents
knew everyone who worked there, and you always knew
what you were going to order beforehand? Mac’s is that
restaurant.
You might almost miss Mac’s because there is only one
neon sign outside acknowledging its presence. It’s one of
those places where you feel like you’re cooler than everyone
else is because you know of this great restaurant that no one
else knows about. Well, I’m going to ruin it and let the secret
out.
When we arrived at Mac’s, almost every table inside and
on the patio was full. Mac’s has an interesting setup for a
restaurant because in the evenings it turns into a bar with
enough space for a dance floor. We grabbed a seat and the
waitress was at our table within a matter of seconds. We had
arrived right around seven, so there was a good number of
people grabbing a drink after work as well as multiple fami
lies, giving the place a casual atmosphere.
We browsed the menu which covered everything from
sauteed mushrooms (the best I’ve ever had) to a New York
Rueben Sandwich to Chicken Picatta (lightly breaded with
mushrooms, garlic and capers, finished with white wine and
fresh lemon juice). The Whisky Cured Prime Rib is also
amazing, especially when accompanied by a fresh strawber
ry margarita. Before the meals came, we snacked on the
sauteed mushrooms and sampled the sweet rolls made from
a family recipe passed on from the owner’s grandmother. We
finished the meal with chocolate mousse that had a dash of
rum in it, a special touch the chef uses to make a classic that
much better.
The entrees range anywhere from $6.00 to $16.00 depend
ing on your fancy. Don’t worry, if you are operating on a col
lege budget and this sounds a little spendy for you, there are
dinner specials on Tuesdays for only $5.00 - just make sure to
get there early; it’s usually packed.
Mac’s is equally good for just hanging out if you’re not
hungry. Every night of the week, different drinks are featured
and beyond that, there are also special nights for bands.
Wednesdays feature Bourbon Renewal, one of the best blues
bands in Eugene, and Thursdays will give you the opportuni
ty to hear some honky-tonk and rock with Christy McCal
lum, an excellent local four piece band.
So whether you’re out for amazing food, drinks after
work, or a down right honky-tonk time, Mac’s at the Vet’s
Club is where it’s at.
