through Sept. 25. The Buzz Coffee
house is also showing pieces from its
permanent collection, entitled
"Choose Your Own Art," which will
be on display through Sept. 3. The
Adell McMillan Gallery, the Aperture
Gallery and the Buzz Coffeehouse are
all located in the EMli.
Two of the University's other art
show places, the Museum of Art and
the Laveme Krause Gallery, are both
closed. The Laveme Krause Gallery,
located in Lawrence Hall, is closed for
the summer and will reopen in Octo
ber. The Museum of Art is closed for
renovations and is scheduled to re
open in the fall of2004.
So whatever the artistic fancy —
whether for Asian art, collage, char
coal drawings or utensil figurines —
there is plenty out there to enjoy.

SPUN

junkies when he arranged to meet San
tos. After Santos recounted some tales,
the two decided to write a fictionalized
account of Santos' actual stint as a driv
er for a local meth cook. The result
was "SPUN."
Somewhere in between the screen
writer's meeting and the production
of the movie, the trail becomes mud
dy. Allegedly, both Vero and Santos
became heavy users of speed in the
process of researching the local scene,
and Santos checked into rehab and
left Vero with the script. When Santos
checked out, a series of scuffles for
possession of the manuscript erupt
ed that bridged Vero in Portland and
Santos in Los Angles. Faced with an
unfinished script, Santos allowed
Vero to write the conclusion. This ex
plains some of the story's flaws, but it
does not excuse them.
The film isn't a total loss, however.
It's worth seeing just to witness the
sheer visual stimulus, and the cameos
that include Deborah Harry as Ross'
lesbian phone sex worker neighbor,
Rob Halford as a pom store clerk and
Billy Corgan (who created the haunt
ing soundtrack) as a doctor. Besides,
all the drugs and sex will probably
ensure that this movie will go down
in history as a cult classic, but should
you pick up a copy of "SPUN* to
watch, just be sure you've got some
thing else to do as you watch it.

Courtesy Clerks, these guys were
mentioned in a Rolling Stone article
awhile back. Just a blurb — and
Rolling Stone isn't worthy of being
Mick Jagger's toilet paper — but it's
still a nice gesture.
I know there are probably many
great bands out there that I've failed
to mention, and if you are a member
or fan of one of these bands, too bad.
1 can't listen to everything.
The Eugene music scene isn't perfect
and like with any other collection of
musical talent there is a lot of crap out
there. But that's just the way it goes with
any music scene, and overall, 1 would
say we have it better than most. Some
of these bands could make it big, most
probably won't. But they're playing
now, and that's good enough for me
