NEWS BRIEF
University extends deadline
for privacy code input
The University General Council's of
fice has extended the submission date
of its updated student privacy code to
Sept. 2 to gamer more public comment
on the issue, said Randy Geller, director
of policy and legal affairs.
The extension of the original Aug.
11 deadline was granted after several
individuals requested more time for
students to comment before the final
draft is sent to Secretary of State Bill
Bradbury for verification.
Geller said there are no public hearings
scheduled before the deadline, but they
would continue to receive and consider
written public comment on the issue
"We'll review all of the comments
that have been received and deter
mine what updates to make," he said.
"It'll start to happen soon because
we're not that far away from Sept. 2."
The new code will bring the Uni
versity in line with federal laws that al
low law enforcement authorities to re
quest personal student information
without notifying the student. The
laws have existed since 1994, but
there have not been any such requests
made to the University in the past.
Those interested in commenting
on the updates to the code can submit
written testimony to the attention of
the rules coordinator at the General
Council's office, 221 Johnson Hall.

Grads
continued from page 1
their names printed in the program
as graduates.
Unlike the grand spring com
mencement that draws thousands of
students, along with their families
and friends, Johnson said the sum
mer ceremony is scaled down and
more intimate.
"They do read everybody's name,"
Hammock said, adding that the
name reading is an honor spring
graduates do not get in the main cere
mony due to the sheer number of
graduates. However, summer gradu
ates do miss out on the separate de
partment graduations.
In case of rain, the ceremony will
be at McArthur Court. There will
also be an informal reception for
graduates and their families after
commencement.
