One of the tests that soldiers had to complete was a nine-mile run with a full pack in less than two hours. While in Europe during World War II, Springer was a medical adminis trator at a field hospital — like in the show M*A*S*II, he says — and eventually won a Bronze Star Medal during his service for being a "good soldier," as he put it. Itie former world champion was also a professor at the University of Tennessee where he taught soils for 25 years. Springer has a wife, three sons and two granddaughters, including Al lison who is a freshman in high school and runs track. One time the two even ran in a road race together, but Allison went on to finish as the third girl while Springer was "way back." Yet even at age 89, Springer is still running. But for how long? "Until they haul me off," he says with a laugh. "Ihere'd be no better way to kick off then out here on the track." In October, Springer will turn 90 and enter a new age bracket. And al though this season has come to a close, he plans on competing at the national championships again, if he's around. "You see, at age 89, you don't plan that far ahead," Springer said when asked about next year. "If I'm still running and I'm healthy, I'll be at nationals." Springer's gende demeanor and soft tones are an inspiration to anyone who ever said they were too old to compete, or a little too out of shape to try and be active. With his aged wisdom, Springer has advice for those types. "I think everybody ought to be ac tive, " he said. "It gets rid of your trou bles and if you get out here and get tired, it feels good."
