to shouting out practiced words in front
of a large crowd. Expression is diverse
and manifold.
And thus far, these words seem
targeted solely at writers. But what
Emerson touches upon in his essay
on the poet is — odd and contradic
tory as it seems — writing poetry
does not require a keyboard or pen
or typewriter. This is because all hu
mans are drawn to expression, and
it's time to once again make expres
sion a priority in our lives. "The
people fancy they hate poetry, and
they are all poets and mystics,"
Emerson says. Find poetry in the
lowest, the highest and all the gray
in between — if you are a preacher,
teacher, busboy or barista. "The
poorest experience is rich enough
for ail the purposes of expressing
thought,' Emerson notes.
Turn this very article into a poem
by folding its meaning into all sorts
of different shapes.
