with most sales between classes, adding
that the second session of summer term
is much slowei than the first because of
the drop in student numbers.
And unlike Nally's hot dog busi
ness, King said the nearby construc
tion has helped Java *U."
"A lot of the construction workers get
coffee from us in the morning,* King
said. *1 know we do a lot more business
then because tips are about $20 in the
morning and $5 in the afternoon."
Matt Ferrelli, a bartender at Taylor's
Bar and Grill, said the bar is not near
ly as busy in the summer as the rest of
the year. As a result, most of the bar's
employees take vacations and work
fewer hours.
Ferrelli said the most popular drinks
during the summer are light beers, iced
teas, lemonades and cocktails. The
summer crowd includes more native
Eugene residents, making it a more
"laid-back" group than the usual stu
dent patrons, Ferrelli said.
Rick Gersbach, a University graduate
and an employee at the University Book
store's Digital Duck, said business is
"pretty consistent" during the summer.
"Mondays are pretty busy because
people bring in photos they took over
the weekend," Gersbach said.
Gersbach explained that most pic
tures are from parties or of nature scenes.
He said more slides are processed dur
ing the summer, probably to show off
vacation photos. Gersbach added that
many photos also come from summer
events, such as the Oregon Country Fair.
Susan Kelley, owner of Blue Heron Bi
cycles, said business continues to be
busy over the summer. Kelley said sun
nier weather encourages people to enjoy
the outdoors more; and added that she
sees more community members come
to the bike store during the summer.
Kelley explained that events like the
Oregon Bach Festival draw many
tourists into Eugene. Some of these
tourists rent bicycles from her store to
enjoy the weather and Eugene's scenery.
Kelley added that people always
come in year round for bike repairs.
“There's never a shortage of things
to fix," Kelley said.
On the other hand, there's always
a shortage of hair to cut during the
summer for George Dudley, who
works at Kampus Barber Shop.
Dudley said he always sees a drop
in customers in the summer because
the barbershop relies mostly on stu
dents during the school year.
Dudley said community members
and more available parking keeps busi
ness going during the summer, but
business is always slowest at the end of
summer session. The barbershop ex
pects business to increase in the fall
when people get haircuts for "a fresh
start* Dudley said.
