Funds continued from page 1 legislation would be used to fund brain imagery technology and re search the connections between brains and genetics, adding that the Brain, Biology and Machine Initiative has already made progress in study ing functions of the brain such as at tention, memory and language. Funding from previous years has been used to study the nervous sys tems of animals such as zebrafish and cuttlefish. In addition, the lab has re searched the effects of genetics, expe riences and the environment on the mental development of children. "We're trying to create a bridge between genetics and the brain," Neville said. On Time Systems is also looking to benefit from the proposed spending bill. On Time Systems CEO Matt Gins berg said he would be "pleasantly surprised" if his company received the requested $4 million, but seemed confident that it would pan out. "1 would be very surprised if we didn't," Ginsberg said. Ginsberg said the company focuses on making manufacturing more effi cient in both military and civilian op erations. The company is developing software to make ship building more cost-effective for the U.S. Navy. Ginsberg noted that a company such as General Motors Corp. wants to be extremely productive, making as many cars as possible. The Navy, on the other hand, wants to make a set number of ships and save money rather than having a surplus of equip ment, Ginsberg explained. "1 know that saving the Navy mon ey won't directly help social pro grams," Ginsberg said. "But at some level, making the government more efficient will benefit many people."
