His flair for vi sual style could make this an interest ing little cult item. July 25 brings a set of sequels. First is "Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over," the last in Robert Rodriguez's wildly popular series of adventure films. This time it's in 3-D, complete with cool paper glasses. To top it off, Sylvester Stallone is the villain. Next, is "Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life," ar riving about two years after its prede cessor. Again, it finds Angelina Jolie in the title role, this time on a quest to save the world from nothing less than Pandora's Box. The film's director is Jan de Bont, who hasn't helmed a film since 1999's "The Haunting." Mike Figgis' films have always been known for their experimental der ring-do, and "Hotel" is no exception. It further develops the technique of Figgis' 'Timecode," which was a split screen, digital film. "Hotel" was shot with digital cameras, and performers improvised the film during its pro duction. The film opens on July 25 in limited release and will hopefully make its way to Eugene. August 1 marks the date of "Ameri can Wedding," the third in the "American Pie" series. This time, wed ding bells are ringing for Jim (Jason Biggs) and Michelle (Alyson Hanni gan). Yahoo. Signaling the waning summer movie season on August 15 is the re lease of "Freddy vs. Jason." After years of wrangling over a script, a film has fi nally emerged combining two of the most popular horror franchises in film history, which is a major event for hor ror fans and comparable to "King Kong vs. Godzilla." Also making an ap pearance in limited release is "Ameri can Splendor," a film about comic books — in this case, creator Harvey Pekar, who is responsible for the auto biographical comic of the same name. This film is an interesting mix of fiction and reality, as there are parallel sets of actors featured, including the actual people, in real life, and the fictional people who play them. Ryan Nyfourg and Aaron Shakra are freelance reporters for the Emerald. Shakra continued from page 5 companies already do, but they still insist on sending us the same mate rials in physical form. Trust me, if you send us e-mail, we'll get it. We can check our e-mail from almost any computer, wherever we go. Plus, when it comes to pho tos and pictures, this also saves the design desk from having to manual ly scan materials into the computer. Also, we're less likely to actually know that your product exists at all if we're deluged with similarly colored pieces of paper and packets. The in formation about that awesome indie music release is going get lost in piles of physical material, whereas looking through an e-mail list, everything is conveniently stacked. The Pulse desk, which covers arts and entertainment, should also con cern itself with the everyday impact of the subjects we're writing about. Art doesn't, and shouldn't, exist in a vac- « uum alienated from the world as a whole. I know saying what art is or is n't may be opening a larger can of ^ worms, but please, public relations world, tread lighter on this paper. Aaron Shakra is a freelance reporter for the Emerald.
