Track Ducks recognize
top athletes with awards

men’s and women’s teams

The Duck track and field teams
are a week away from any NCAA
awards, but at the annual banquet
Tuesday night, they gave awards
to themselves.
Senior decathlete Santiago Loren
zo and senior thrower Mary Etter
earned the George Scharpf and Mary
Officer awards, respectively, as their
teams’ most valuable athletes.
Lorenzo won the Pacific-10 Con
ference title and is ranked third na
tionally heading into the NCAA
Championships. Etter leads the Ore
gon squad in the discus, hammer
and shotput. She ranks 11th nation
ally in the discus and will compete in
the national meet in that event.
In other men’s awards, Jason
Hartmann earned the Bill Dellinger
Cross Country Award as the most
valuable harrier. Hartmann had his
best NCAA cross country finish this
season, as he took 20th at the na
tional meet and earned All-Ameri
can honors. Hartmann will run the
10,000-meter race at next week’s
NCAA Championships.
Senior hurdler Terry Ellis won the
Dow Wilson Award as the most in
spirational athlete, while junior
sprinter Samie Parker earned the
Perry Holloman Award for the most
improved athlete.
In other women’s awards, senior
pole vaulter Becky Holliday earned
the Lynne Winbigler Performer of
the Year Award. The award came on
the heels of her collegiate record
breaking performance at the NCAA
West Regionals. She vaulted 14 feet,
8 inches, barely setting the new
NCAA record in the event. Her per
formance earned her the West Re
gion Athlete of the Year award, and
she will be honored Monday at a
banquet in Sacramento, Calif., site of

gional award, Holliday could also be
tabbed for a national athlete of the
year award.
Also at Tuesday’s banquet, senior
sprinter Janette Davis earned the
Harry Ritchie Award for the most in
spirational women’s athlete. Senior
distance runner Carrie Zografos re
ceived the Tom Heinonen Cross
Country Award.
Finally, junior transfer Abby An
drus earned the Coaches’ Award as
the most improved athlete. Andrus
will compete in the NCAA Champi
onships heptathlon next week.
Final national
rankings
In one week, national rankings
won’t mean diddly-squat if teams
don’t perform at the NCAAs, but the
rankings can provide a barometer
heading into the NCAA Champi
onships. The Oregon men dropped
to 25th in the most recent rankings
by trackwire.com, while the women
jumped to 13th overall.
Once again, Pac-10 and South
eastern Conference teams domi
nate the rankings. On the men’s
side, Arkansas and Auburn, both
of the SEC, share the top spot,
while USC and UCLA are close be
hind. Stanford is ranked 11th, and
nine other SEC squads dominate
the rankings.
On the women’s side, UCLA sits
third, Stanford is ninth, USC is 11th
and Arizona State is 20th.
