Survey results also show that a
majority of Republicans, conserva
tives, Democrats and liberals sup
port most climate-change policies.
“One of the most surprising find
ings was the strong, bipartisan sup
port for action,” Anthony Leis
erowitz, a principal investigator for
the study, said in a press release.
Leiserowitz did not return phone
calls as of press time.
The mail survey was funded by
the National Science Foundation —
a governmental organization that
supports scientific research — and
included a mail questionnaire sent
to 673 adults in a random sample of
all 50 states. Policy results were
compiled from a sampling of 92 per
cent of Americans who had heard of
global warming. The researchers
also concluded that a margin of er
ror of plus or minus 4 percent exist
ed for results based on the total sam
ple of adults.
The survey comes on the heels of
the National Energy Plan, which is
currently being debated in the U.S.
Senate. U.S. Sens. John McCain, R
Ariz., and Joe Lieberman, D-Conn.,
recently introduced an amendment
to the plan that would reduce green
house gas emissions.
Nathaniel N-T, a co-director of the
Responsible Consumer Network
and a member of the University Sur
vival Center, said he still considers
greenhouse gas emissions a “huge
issue” but doubts that 80 percent of
Americans are truly concerned
about the issue.
“I don’t believe 80 percent of
Americans are really doing anything
to reduce greenhouse gas emis
sions,” he said.
