Ducks could
score at NCAAs
In all, 14 Oregon men will try
to scone points fbrthe Ducks
at the last meet of the season

The dust has barely settled at
Stanford after the West Regional
meet last weekend, but it’s already
time to look ahead to the NCAA
Championships.
The Ducks will send 14 athletes to
the NCAA finale. Santiago Lorenzo,
Jason Hartmann and Ryan Andrus
all qualified before this weekend’s
meet, while 11 other Ducks ran or
jumped into the NCAAs at the quali
fying meet or earned wild cards.
But a large contingent at the
NCAA Championships doesn’t guar
antee points. Only the top eight in
each event score points for the
team.
It doesn’t take a lot of points to do
well at NCAAs. Oregon finished third
at the Pacific-10 Conference meet
last month with 127 points. Mean
while, Southern Methodist finished
third at last year’s NCAA Champi
onships with 42 points. The differ
ence is the number of teams at
NCAAs, which has the same amount
of points available, but the points are
obviously spread out over a greater
number of teams.
Oregon scored 27 points and fin
ished ninth at the NCAA Champi
onships in 2001, when the event was
held at Hayward Field. Two athletes
were responsible for 20 of those
points. Lorenzo won the NCAA de
cathlon title, while John Stiegeler
took the javelin crown.
Both of those athletes redshirted
last season with injuries and both
are back this year, though neither is
ranked as high as they were in 2001.
Lorenzo is ranked third nationally
heading into the NCAAs, while
Stiegeler is ranked 19th in the na
tion.
Based solely on current rankings,
the Ducks would get 11 points out of
their 14 competitors. Lorenzo would
score six points, Sarnie Parker would
score three points for a sixth-place
finish in the 100-meter dash, Adam
Kriz would earn two points for his
seventh-place standing in the ham
mer throw and that would end the
Ducks’ scoring.
But a handful of Oregon athletes
sit close to the cusp of the scoring
places. Eric Logsdon ranks ninth in
the 5,000-meter run, Jason Hart
mann is 12th in the 10,000, Trevor
Woods is ranked 13th in pole vault
and Eric Mitehum is 16th in the 110
meter hurdles.
If any of those athletes can jump
up some spots like many Ducks were
able to do in 2001, Oregon could end
up with more than those 11 points.
Eleven points would have placed
Oregon 23rd overall at last year’s
NCAA meet.
Jenkins, Akinradewo
miss cut
Adam Jenkins and Foluso Akin
radewo, two seniors who were con
sistent all season in the javelin and
triple jump, respectively, officially
missed the NCAAs. Both had a small
chance at a wild card berth — the
same berth that Trevor Woods
earned — but missed the NCAA cut,
which was announced on Monday.
Akinradewo and Jenkins both fin
ished seventh at the West Regional
and needed to finish top 5 to make
the NCAAs.
4x400 madness
The Oregon relay teams have
never been the strength of the
squad, but on Saturday the 4x400
relay team pulled off an amazing
performance at the West Regionals.
After the team of Travis Anderson,
Matt Scherer, Santiago Lorenzo
and Brandon Holliday got the
Ducks into the finals, Oregon
switched out Lorenzo for Jordan
Kent in the final. But the Ducks
were scheduled to run in the slower
of two heats, which usually means
death to good times.
But right at the end, Oregon
pulled out the second-fastest time of
any team in the regionals, sending
the team into NCAAs on a very high
note.
