The World of Poetry: Caribbean Rhythms
Informed by the turbulent events of the time, reggae music emerged from a
complex network of roots and flourished in various cultural contexts, including
a richness of Afro-Caribbean Anglophone poetry (including, but not limited to,
Jamaica) dating back to the 1950s. Poets on our reading include the work of
Derek Walcott, Edward Kamau Brathwaite, Grace Nichols, Lorna Goodison,
David Dabydeen, Kwame Dawes, Jean Binta Breeze, and Michelle Cliff.

Jackson named finalist
for USA team
Luke Jackson was named Sunday
as one of 17 players on the list of final
ists for the USA team that will play in
August’s Pan-American Games.
“I was a little nervous before, so
when I found out, I was really excited
and just relieved,” Jackson said on
Sunday. “I am just pretty thrilled
right now thinking how I may get to
represent my country this summer.”
Jackson joined 50 other players
who were invited to the USA Basket
ball Men’s National Team Trials that
began on Friday. Twenty-three of
those players were also eligible for
the USA Basketball Junior World
Championship Team coached by
Oregon head coach Ernie Kent.
The 17 selected for the USA men’s
team will attend a training camp in
July where they will be narrowed to
the final 12.
“I definitely want to develop as a
player and get better in different as
pects of my game,” Jackson said.
“Right now I am more of a perimeter
player so I want to work on different
dimensions of my game.”
Softball season ends
with awards
Five Ducks earned team honors at
Oregon’s annual softball banquet on
Saturday.
Senior Andrea Vidlund was named
the Most Outstanding Player after
leading the team with a .370 batting
average and setting a single-season
home run record with 16. She also
earned 11 saves in the pitching cir
cle to lead the nation.
Amy Harris earned the top pitcher
award. In her first season, Harris set a
freshman single-season record with
180 strikeouts.
Senior Amber Hutchison was
named the top offensive player, fresh
man Breanne Sabol earned top defen
sive player and junior Julie Jaime was
named Most Inspirational.
Hutchison led the team with 19
stolen bases while Sabol started
every game at shortstop in her first
college season.
Ellis named
to All-Region Team
John Ellis, who led the Oregon
men’s golf team to its first NCAA
Championships appearance in four
years, earned a spot on the 15-per
son Ping Pacific All-Region Team.
Ellis’ 72.3 season stroke average
helped him finish in the top 10 six times
this year, including a tie for first at the
Oregon Duck Invitational in March.
The team captain finished 14th at
the Pacific-10 Conference Champi
onships and tied for 22nd at the
NCAA West Regional. Before the
unannounced cut at the national
meet, Ellis was third among the five
Ducks competing.
