News brief
New leadership takes
control of ASUO
Student Senate
A changing of the guard occurred
on Wednesday evening as the 2002
03 ASUO student senators relin
quished their seats to the 2003-04
ASUO Student Senate-elects. Retir
ing senators shared advice and
memories before leaving the table.
The 2003-04 senate addressed
several housekeeping issues, special
requests and the nominations for
summer session senate president
and vice president positions in their
first meeting.
The senate approved special re
quests for fund transfers for the
Black Student Union’s graduation
ceremony, the senate’s finance
committee barbecue, Black
Women of Achievement’s Ebony
Man Event, KWVA’s pager service
and Pre-Health’s event to honor
program contributors.
The senate also granted the
ASUO Executive a special request
of #1,930 out of surplus to be used
toward the deficit created during
special elections. The deficit was
partly a result of higher advertising
costs and mandatory advertising
requirements. The executive is un
able to budget for special elections
during the ASUO Programs Fi
nance Committee budget process
because special elections are not a
planned event.
The senate also began preparing
for its summer session, which meets
periodically throughout the sum
mer months. Mena Ravassipour,
senate seat two, was nominated for
senate president for summer ses
sion, and Aryn Clark, senate seat
five, was nominated for vice presi
dent for summer session. Nomina
tions and elections for the 2003-04
school year senate president and
vice president will occur next fall.
The senate will meet once during
dead week before adjourning for the
summer. Summer session will begin
after finals week and is expected to
meet at least once before June 30.
