President
continued from page 1
Melton said the magnitude of be
ing ASUO president continues to
hit her at odd moments and still
boggles her mind.
A recent example of this occurred
when Melton was driving home from
the airport on Monday with some
students from the University Resi
dence Hall Association, and at one
point they were driving behind a car
with a University of Oregon sticker
on the back. Melton said one of the
guys asked her how it felt to be the
president of a university that has a
campus brimming with more than
20,000 students.
“There are moments when it’s
like, ‘Whoa, this is for real,”’
she said.
Leading the students at such a
large university can change people,
however. When Pilliod was first
elected as ASUO president for 2002
03, she vowed that she had no fur
ther political ambitions — the Uni
versity senior just wanted to go to
medical school. But now she said
she’s working away from the life of
needles and surgical gloves.
“If this year has taught me any
thing, besides a lesson in patience,
it’s that I really enjoy public policy
management,” Pilliod said.
Pilliod said she is proud of the
work her administration accom
plished because they have made
positive changes in the campus
community with their efforts. She
specifically pointed to the 2002
03 ASUO staff’s work on legisla
tive issues as a strong point be
cause the ASUO was able to help
lead two powerful higher educa
tion lobbying organizations — the
Oregon Student Association and
the United States Student Associ
ation. In fact, University students
have held top spots on the OSA
and the USSA. In addition, the
ASUO legislative staff members
lobbied at the federal level and
were able to increase funding for
Pell Grants, which go to the need
iest college students, and were re
warded for their legislative efforts
by the USSA.
Although her reign as ASUO
president is over, Pilliod said she
doesn’t plan on straying from the
path of leadership and wants to
continue furthering progressive
ideals. In fact, Pilliod, along with
Bridget Burns, Oregon State Uni
versity student body president, has
been appointed as a student repre
sentative to the Oregon State
Board of Higher Education by Gov.
Ted Kulongoski.
