According to University student
and Grupo Raca member Leland
Baxter-Neal, capoeira is a Por
tuguese word that means “a clearing
in a thicket.” He said slaves in
Brazil, who sought a means of self
defense and an expression of free
dom, initiated the martial art/dance.

“Because slaves were forbidden to
practice any fighting skills, they
cleverly altered many African reli
gious dances so that when they
practiced their martial arts, it ap
peared as if they were dancing,”
Baxter-Neal said.
Capoeiristas form a circle where
traditional music is played and
sung. Some players then move
into the circle and challenge each
other in a game of capoeira. Syn
copated patterns of rhythm res
onate from various percussion in
struments in accompaniment with
a single-stringed instrument called
a Berimbau.
“The music is the heartbeat of
the circle,” Baxter-Neal said. “The
players oscillate to the music and
the drumming sets the general
pace of the game.” Baxter-Neal
added the game is less about domi
nating the other player than it is
about communication.
“It’s a dialogue of energy and move
ment,” he said. “It’s about expressing
yourself to the other player.”
Mestre Acordeon, a venerated
capoeirista who was instrumental in
bringing capoeira to the United
States, was one of the many players
present at the Batizado. Before the
Batizado began, Mestre Acordeon
spoke to the roda, or circle.
“To play capoeira is more than
kicking and thinking,” he said. “It is
a way of life, and historically a cry
for freedom,” he said. “It is a pre
cious gift. My hope and wish is you
will carry it in your heart and prac
tice it with love and respect.”
As the Batizado proceeded, junior
Gabe Dour was called inside the cir
cle to receive his initiation. He was
pitted against an experienced
capoeirista whose skill far exceeded
his own. They moved rhythmically
around the circle, then with a sud
den burst, the mestre took Dour to
the mat. Dour was officially baptized
and received his first belt.
“It is a rite of passage for me,”
Dour said. “I go from being innocent
to knowing.”
Dour said he discovered capoeira
in his early teens at the Oregon
Country Fair.
“It is the most social art form
I’ve been involved in,” he said.
“This Batizado of Grupo Raca will
put Eugene on the map in the
world of capoeira.”
Yellow Flower, another new mem
ber, reflected on the struggle to get
to the point of baptism.
“I’ve worked really hard for nine
months,” she said. “It’s been a
struggle, but my struggle reflects
the history of capoeira, which has
had to struggle for it’s own freedom.
I feel like I’m being adopted into a
family.” Cruz said his only regret
for Saturday’s event was that more
masters from other countries were
not present, due to visa difficulties.
However, he added that the cere
mony was awesome.
“The energy was beautiful and
the students did a wonderful job in
helping to make the Batizado hap
pen,” Cruz said.

it is with feeling. On “Shalom
Salaam,” Marley sings: “Who will
take the blame for the blood of my
children / To who does vengeance
belong to no one no one / We’re dy
ing from tanks and suicide bombs /
The only answer is to live as one.”
The emotion and immediacy of the
words in these songs hit a listener
square on. Often, all it takes is the
repetition of a single phrase:
“Shalom salaam shalom salaam.”
Marley and his band returned for
a three-song encore that included
Bob Marley’s “Jamming.” The final
tune of the night was “Dragonfly,”
an acoustic number with lyrics that
gave the night a summation:
“Everybody’s worried about time /
But I just keep that shit off my
mind / People living on twenty
four-hour clocks / But we’re on a
ride that never stops.”

to be two-timed. Why are you let
ting yourself feel like you’ve been
cheated on when actually, you
weren’t cheated at all?
Excuse the bluntness, but when
you make a choice, you also choose
the consequences of that decision. No
one told you to brood for years over a
girl whom you’ve never dated. You de
cided to give your romantic feelings to
someone without reciprocation, and
when you take that much of a risk,
betrayal is almost expected.
For now, be a good friend to this
girl. She has probably lost sleep over
her pregnancy scare and needs a
shoulder to lean on. And for the fu
ture, reduce your chances of betray
al by choosing paths in love that vis
ibly lead to rosy outcomes.
