QJhatH Men's continued from page 9 morning. “Luckily I got enough sleep and I could rejuvenate to come back to day,” Collins said. The men soon took to the dis tances, and Kenya’s Abraham Chebii didn’t disappoint the dis tance-running fans at Hayward. Chebii used a 51-second last lap in the 5,000 meters to take the event in 13:08.10, less than one second short of the Hayward Field record. Chebii stunned fellow Kenyan Ben Limo, who was ranked first in the world in the event, with a huge kick over the last 200 meters. The meet concluded with its signa ture event, the Bowerman Mile. All eyes were on a pair of high schoolers, future Duck Mike McGrath and Texas’ Steve Magness, as they attempted to break the four-minute barrier. They stuck together for much of the race until Magness broke away in the final lap, missing the four-minute ceiling by 1.02 seconds. McGrath finished in 4:10.66. Kenya’s Bernard Lagat won the event in 3:50.21, nearly eclipsing Hicham El Guerrouj’s meet record of 3:49.92. Alan Webb, whose high school mile record was part of “El G”’s record-setting day in 2001, ran a sub four minute mile in Saturday’s Pre. A day of high notes ended on a low one as high jump winner Miguel Pate was carted off the field. He landed on the side of the high jump pit and injured his ankle, but had al ready won the competition with a leap of 27-013/4. The 29th Prefontaine Classic was a meet of fast times and highlights, even a 300-pound man clearing two hurdles. What will they think of next? His Prefontaine Classic time was a personal record for the senior. The final lap “felt like hell,” he said. “I was just tying up so bad. I just kept on thinking, ‘fight on, fight on. I can do it.’ I was right where I wanted to be the whole way.” Magness said he normally runs each lap of the mile at approximately 59 seconds, but his final round on Sat urday was unofficially just over that time. Still, the Prefontaine Classic looks to be a huge building block for his career. Kenya’s Bernard Lagat won the mile at a time of 3:50.21, less than a second slower than the Prefontaine record set by Hicham El Guerrouj in 2001. Canada’s Kevin Sullivan took second, and Alex Kipchirchir of Kenya placed third. For Webb, the mile was a chance to see where he stands. For McGrath and Magness, the Prefontaine was a chance to get out on the national stage and begin what could be a successful collegiate career. If anything, the Prefontaine mile gave the Hayward crowd something to cheer about. “They’re the best fans in the world,” Webb said. “It’s where I want to be. It’s great to run in front of this crowd. It’s fun.” Contact the sports reporter at hankhager@dailyemerald.com. Join the Peer Health Ed.
