Women’s hoops
announces signings
Oregon women’s basketball
head coach Bev Smith announced
on Thursday the signing of two
high school players for the upcom
ing season.
Cicely Oaks, from Grant High
School in Portland, and Eleanor Har
ing from Mullaloo, West Australia, will
join the team next season. The duo
completes a five-member recruiting
class expected to pull the Ducks out
of their two-year postseason drought.
Oaks, a 5-foot-7 guard, averaged 23
points for Grant last season.
“As an Oregon product, we feel
that she will be an important con
tributing member to our women’s
basketball team,” Smith said.
Haring, a forward, played on the
Australian national junior team
last season.
The Ducks also signed center
Jessica Shetters and guards Ash
ley Allen and Kaela Ghapdelaine
during the initial signing period
in November.

And as I was running back down
the hill ... oh goodness, this is
cheesier than a slice of pizza ... but
as I was running back down the hill,
I swear Pre ran in front of me. His
hair flowing, loping along the street
with with his trademark gait, mak
ing running look as easy as walking.
We must be content with what he
gave its.
Pre gave us something we can’t
put a finger on. Exuberance. Vitali
ty. Life, even in death. Most impor
tant, Pre gave us Pre. For that, even
those of us who never lived with him
are forever thankful.

Goodell and Sabol also led the
sacrifice bunt attack the Ducks
worked on throughout the season.
Goodell was second in the Pac-10
with nine sacrifice bunts while
Sabol and third baseman Lynsey
Haij tied for third with eight each.
Haij led the Ducks with a .452 on
base percentage in her senior sea
son. During her career as a Duck,
she started every game but four, all
at either third or shortstop.
At the opposite corner, senior
Alyssa Laux started every game but
five. Laux was recently named to
the NFCA All-Pacific region second
team. Vidlund was also named to
the team.
The Ducks’ season ended with a
6-4 loss to Louisiana-Lafayette on
Sunday in the Region 6 Champi
onship game.
For now, the Arendsen-dubbed
“team of destiny” can only sit and
watch as four teams it has beaten
this season — Washington, Califor
nia, UCLA and Louisiana-Lafayette
— play in the Women’s College
World Series.
Oregon loses five seniors from the
squad after this season. Vidlund,
Hutchison, Haij, Laux and Janell
Bergstrom will all graduate, leaving
the squad in the hands of four soon
to-be seniors.
“Our seniors gave us a tremendous
experience, and I couldn’t be more
proud of this ballclub,” Arendsen said.
“We had a really great year.”
The offseason will be of a different
flavor for the Ducks. Not since the
2000 offseason have the Ducks end
ed a season with the same head
coach who will return in the fall.
Arendsen and her Ducks will now
wait for next year and another shot
at the WCWS, which they missed
by one win this season.
