Women finish seventh in Pac-10 finale Senior Becky Holliday earns her first Rac-10 title as field athletes dominate for the Ducks Women’s track and field Jesse Thomas Sports Reporter Redshirt senior Becky Holliday has seen the situation before. The pole vault is winding down and she has no one to compete with. But when you are ranked No. 1 in the nation, that can happen. At the Pacific-10 Conference Championships on Sunday, the real ity was no different. Hollidlay was left to compete against her own will when no other competitor could clear 13 feet, 7 inches. She could have opted out with the Pae-10 tide after 13-7, but the Sparks, Nev., native got it in her head to jump nine inches higher and make her own school record a little more out of reach. “It’s awe some, it was def initely what I wanted,” Holli day said after clearing 14-6, a personal best by Holliday 3/4 of an inch. “As soon as I stepped out on the run way I knew. I just had to grab a certain pole and jump on it and I did.” Holliday missed all three attempts at 14-9. The Ducks racked up 19 points in the pole vault, helping them to a sev enth-place finish overall, above Ari zona and California. UCLA took home the team title for the third straight year with 155 points, leaving runner-up Stanford 15 points shy. “We didn’t have much in the way of breakthroughs today,” Oregon head coach Tom Heinonen said. “Becky was just out of site and we’re glad the vaulters did so well.” On the runway, the Ducks account ed for 11 of their 60 points, the second highest scoring event for Oregon. Sophomore Roslyn Lundeen was on her way to a Pac-10 javelin title after hitting 159-8, a one-foot -five inch season best, on just her second throw. But conference leader Inga Stasiulionyte let one rip for 168-11 on her second-to-last throw and Lundeen had to settle for second and eight team points. “I couldn’t be happier with the placing,” said Lundeen, who entered the meet ranked fourth. “To come away in second, I can’t complain.” Senior Mary Etter finished sixth in Saturday’s shot put, her highest Pac-10 honor in the event. She re turned to finish fourth in the discus (177-1) on Sunday yet fouled her last four throws. Etter’s final throw of more than 188 feet would have given her the conference title by more than five feet if it hadn’t landed foul. “I’ve been hitting 180s in prac tice,” Etter said. “I threw as best as I could, I just need to quit throwing conservatively. I want regionals right now, I don’t want to wait.” Three-quarters of Oregon’s 60 points came from field events as the Ducks have dominated in the field over the past few years. The track athletes did not fare nearly as well, partially due to excessive heat. Oregon’s only individual scorers on the track were seniors Janette Davis and Eri Macdonald in the 400 and 800 meters, respectively. After entering the meet ranked fourth and hoping for a top-three fin ish, Davis finished sixth in 55.02 sec onds. Macdonald finished seventh in 2:10.87, three seconds slower than her season best. Oregon’s 4x400 meter relay did improve by more than three sec onds, finishing fifth in 3:42.86, earn ing the team four points after enter ing the meet ranked eighth. “I feel good about the way our kids competed but we didn’t light the place up,” Heinonen said. “But that happens in track.” Contact the sports reporter at jessethomas@dailyemerald.com.
